At the southside of the Tamale citycentre, a Chinese company is currently building a great new football (soccer) stadium. This Tamale Stadium is to be opened in 2008, when it will be used for the 26th African Nations Cup, that will be held in Ghana.
The stadium will become the homebase of the local footballclub Real Tamale United, or RTU. It will hold 21.017 people, of which 50% can sit under a roof. Besides the homematches of RTU it will also be a base to organize more sportsevents or other big events.
I was lucky to be able to visit the constructionsite. Officially that was not allowed, but acting like a journalist I was allowed to have a look inside the stadium. It is definitely going to be a great stadium, with modern architecture. Once it is finished I definitely should return to see one of the African Nations Cup matches here.
Swimming at the VRA Clubhouse
If you want to have some relaxation during the weekends and a nice way to get some refreshment, a very nice place to go to is the swimming pool at the VRA Clubhouse.
The VRA stands for Volta River Authority, the electricity company of Ghana. Their terrain in Tamale has some nice bungalows for the personnel and a nice clubhouse and the swimming pool. You can find the VRA Clubhouse at Bolgatanga Road, about 4 kilometres north from the citycentre. Clear sign indicate the directions towards the "VRA Clubhouse".
When you are there you have to pay about $ 1,50 to get in for a full day. The swimming pool is not very big, but the advantage is that the deeper part is hardly used by the guests. Hardly any Ghanaian can swim, so all the black people are in the shallow water. If you CAN swim, you have the whole deeper part for yourself alone.
Remember to bring some food with you if you go there for a longer period, because the only thing you can buy there are some soft drinks in the Clubhouse and some ice creams at the Fan Milk-man who is always around.
