Various: African Queen

by grets

Readily available and reasonably priced, African Queen is a rough local spirit which is nonetheless quite acceptable. We always like to try the local food and drink, so of course we had to give this one a go, despite not being a fan of local ‘whiskeys’.

Various: Use of facilities in exchange for buying drinks

by grets

At lunchtimes, we would usually stop at a small local café or bar, where we would have the use of the facilities in return for purchasing drink. Daniel, the chef who travelled with us, would set up his bush kitchen, and would prepare us a nice salad and a main dish of rice, potatoes or pasta with vegetables and/or meat. Dessert would always be fresh fruits. Kofi, Osman and Lucian (the mini bus drivers) would assist with the food preparations, while Noah would sort the drinks with the waitresses in order to speed things up. Some of the ‘facilities’ were better than others, and on a few occasions we would use toilets in another establishment while still eating/drinking in the café. On one occasion we used a bush toilet prior to the lunch stop, as no facilities were available. The service was always good in this places and the system worked very well. Cleanliness was always a main priority,...

Various: Pepper soup with goat

by grets

A very spicy pepper soup with goat meat. Although very tasty, I found it hard to separate the goat meat from the bones. I tried with the spoon, a knife and fork, my hands and my teeth, but only managed to free a little.

Various: Banku

by grets

Banku is a ‘dumpling’ made from a sour, fermented corn mash which is wrapped in plantain leaves and boiled. It is to be eaten with your hands (right hand only). Here it was served with fried tilapia and an extremely spicy salsa-like fresh sauce.

Various: Red Red Chicken

by grets

Red red chicken is a sauce of black eye peas with gari (course cassava flour) and chicken, served with plantain fried in red palm oil. It was very, very tasty (there was also additional chilli served in a small dish separately), albeit a little greasy. There are variation with other meats or fish available too. This dish is served in many restaurants all over Ghana

Vic Baboons: Vegetarian food and delicious Indian Meals

by morgaine_anastasia

When you are allready used to Ghanaian standards it might be a bit expensive restaurant, but still quite cheap and definetly worth it. Good Indian Meals and a lot of vegetarian meals. But also pizza and chinese food. Also a variety of dishes and lots of choice for the vegetarians among us. Some Indian dish with Spinach and chapati's

International Traveler's Inn: In Bolgatanga, Northeastern District

by atufft

This is a popular place for Peace Corps volunteers to hang out. Christie Atubiga and her boys make sandwiches, sell grocery provisions, and provide a place to talk. The television is usually on. Good current advice on what to do in the region can be found here. The food is good, but what makes this place worthwhile is the friendly atmosphere. Everyone becomes part of the family once they step though the door.

This is about Ghana cuisine: Ghana Foodstuffs 2

by atufft

I had to include another explanation because I have a great photo of palm oil and palm nuts. This is a great commodity that is introduced from Africa to the world market, so you might as well see what it looks like. Oil extracted from the nut is used for a whole host of West African dishes, including fufu, gari & beans, and so on. It's rich in vitamin A. Another oil from Ghana that is much more expensive in Europe and America is Shea butter. The oil is extracted from the nut of a fruit collected from wild trees in the northern part of the country. Locals eat the fruit and use the oil for cooking and healing wounds. The rich vitamin A content of this oil, and its natural lotion like properties, make it a hot item in the boutique soap and lotion makers and market. Shea butter is very expensive in Europe and America. Shop for shea butter and bring it home in small quantities. Palm oil is...

None--this is about tribal food: Ghana foodstuffs

by atufft

This really isn't about a restaurant but I didn't know where to put this advice into my pages. Anyway, it might help to know that the Ashanti traditional dish, which can be found anywhere in Ghana and much of West Africa, is called FuFu. American's might compare the globs of casava or yam to dumplings in soup. Palm oil is essential to the soup, and one must learn to use their right hand (left hands are used to do something else) to eat. Women pounding casava is a common sight, especially in the country, but in the north of Ghana a millet is a grain routinely seen growing in the countryside. Harvesting all these crops is a very important tradition. Typically, I ate chicken which was very tasty being of the small pecking range wandering variety (as opposed to factory caged variety). But along with chicken would be rice or hopefully gari, a similarly textured carbohydrate made from...

Frankies: western food, amazing milkshakes!

by Whoopi

Frankies' lies in the Osu area in Accra, where all the whities and lebanese people hang out. They have nice waitors who have been special-trained to kiss customer ass and they have a good selection of typical western food like salads, pizza, burgers, subs, coffee and desserts. Airconditioned and otherwise a good place to eat if you get tired of African food. The tuna baguette is really really nice, made with fresh tuna and homemade dressing, and also the cappochino and the milkshakes are EXCELLENT!!
