Diet and Eating

by Paul-linus

DIET AND EATINGThe diet consists mainly of yams, cassava, maize, plantains, and rice. Ghanaians enjoy hot and spicy food, and most of their meals are accompanied by a pepper sauce made with fish, chicken, or other meats. Popular dishes include fufu (a dough-like combination of plantains and cassava or yams); ampesi (boiled unripe plantains); and palm, coconut, or groundnut oil sauces and soups. Ghana also produces a variety of tropical fruits and vegetables. Most larger restaurants serve Western food as well as native Ghanaian food. Ghanaian food: Very delicious and appetizing.

one of the best: elmina castle restaurant

by abdulwa

the atmosphere is great and to me they are the best in the area.the restaurant food is a blend of foreign and local dish and it has one of the best rice that i have tasted.there is the sea view and sea breeze when you are having your meals and this makes it so special.you dont have to miss this place when you are in elmina.we have other restaurants like wok inn chinese restaurant, frankies, steers, mr biggs, and papaye all in accra which is the centre and believed to have the best in everything but i prefer the elmina castle restaurant. fried rice with broasted chicken.like i said it is the best i have tasted in years and also try their sliced boiled yam with palave sauce.it is so lovely.

Paloma Mall: A collection of Ring Road restaurants

by sarahandgareth

The Paloma Shopping Mall - nothing like an American-style mall! - has four or five different restaurants, popular with foreign visitors and better-off locals. There's a large African restaurant, which serves great chicken dishes, and jollof rice, and the other busy spot is Champs Sports Bar, a bit of an oasis for expats and tourists in need of a break from the reality of Accra, with decent beer, excellent Tex-Mex style food, regular, recent Western movies (a big deal in a country with no actual cinemas), and weekly pub quizzes.

I ate in little places all over Ghana. They had great food, and you should try everythingYou eat a lot of food with your fingers, which was a lot of fun. There were many. fufu, kenkey, banku, omo tua (rice balls) and many other. Fufu is made of cassava, plantain or yam, mashed to a pulp then submerged in a light soup. Kenkey and banku are made of fermented maize meal, boiled in a removable wrapping of plantain leves, and normally eaten with a very spicy tomoto relish. It was great!

Ghana isn't noted for the quality of it's restaurants, and you have to be very careful about where you eat but the Shangrila does excellent pizza and a tiny hotel called Saana Lodge does excellent spaghetti napolitana and the most delicious bread rollsThe Shangrila is a hotel and it has a lovely pool which visitors can pay to use, it has indoor air condition seating or outdoor seating amoung the water features which are inhabited by fish and frogs

I have no favorite restaurant in Ghana, but one should definitely try the fu-fu and kenkey. Ghana 'soups' which are more like a stew, are also very good. Along the Cape Coast there are a few excellent fresh seafood restaurants at extremely attractive prices.

Dragon House 88 or...

Dragon House 88 or FrankiesOther places to eat is any chop bar you find along the way where you can really eat some ghanian foodAt Dragon House the service is better then any place I have been. Friendly people, polite and fast vaitors and you'll get your food so fast you start to wonder how it could be possible.Frankies is a sort of stuck-up fastfood place with nicely dressed workers and everything is done in western style. A bit crowded and noisy, and a lot of tourists and ghanian snobbs are there. At the chop bars you get to see how Ghana is really like, with the friendly ladies sitting there preparing the food right in front of you, maybe they'll ask you where you are from and help you to select what you want. You'll sit with the everyday people on a wooden bench, eat with your fingers and maybe smile back at a few curious soules who has never seen a white man in a chop bar...

can try in all locla restaurants or home-made: try the national dish fufu
