Accra Art Center: Accra Art Center

by ajayzener

Youshould make a visit to the accra art center when in Accra, you can buy some souveniers from here for really cheap, if you are ready to bargain. We brought some wodden masks for as low as 5000 cedis. There are really big ones too which are expensive, but then this is the best place to buy in Accra.

Bonwire Weaving Cooperative: Kente cloth

by perdita

The cooperative is a huge warehouse like building. Inside independent weavers work their looms and display their cloth on the walls. Tourists can bargain with the weavers for various pieces of genuine Kente cloth. You should know that Kente cloth is a product of the Asante culture that thrived in western Africa for centuries. Certain patterns are only worn by royalty. Only men are permitted to weave Kente cloth. You will find yourself surrounded on the walk to and from the cooperative by boys hawking small kente purses, bookmarks and such. Some of these kids are learning to weave and these are their initial efforts. Much less than you would pay in the United States. Some large pieces ran around $35 to $50 US
