Ghana football, not to be missed by serious fans!

by Odinnthor

Ghana is and has one of the world's best football/soccer teams. If you are an enthusiast, and have a chance to attend a game while in Ghana, you will not be disappointed. The all new Baba Yara Stadium re-opened in 2007, after two years of re-construction, and hosted the African Cup of Nations. Ghana also holds the World Title for "Under 20" football teams. The fans are some of the most enthusiastic, - but in a good way, - in the world. A must for any football/soccer fan, is to be able to brag about having attended a game in Accra's Baba Yara Stadium.I was there before the stadium's re-construction and from what I have seen on football TV the renovations are fantastic. However the great football fans of Ghana are as friendly and fanatic as I remember them. Just bring a smile and a great attitude, and a great time will be had by all

by Skipster

If you're passing through Accra and feeling in need of a run around why not try a spot of rugby?!The Accra Rugby Club is based at Legon University and trains every saturday 12h00 to 14h00. It's not too serious - normally a bit of touch rugby follwed by a beer. Water and sun cream

Soccer is King in Ghana

by atufft

Sports talent in Ghana, as in much of West Africa, is very high, and soccer is the king of sports. When in Kumasi, a friend invited me to watch the Ghana national team play Morrocco. The Ghana players rough and persistent style isn't particularly attractive by European standards, as a British tourist commented to me that the Morroccans are better players. And yet, Ghana soundly defeated the Morroccans on that day. The stadium at Kumasi has high steel barricades, and the seating is poorly distributed for viewing the game, but I was there to watch the crowd as much as for the game. The bags of drinking water commonly sold in the region make for excellent drenching of the players when the crowd gets irritated by the performance. Bring your camera and shoot pictures of the crowd and players. Little else is needed. Price for entrance is much lower than equivalent play in Europe or the USA....

Soccer Mad!

by sarahandgareth

If you have a chance, go to the Stadium in Accra or Kumasi to see one of Ghana's best soccer teams - Accra Hearts of Oak or Asante Kotoko Kumasi, who are predictably fierce rivals - in action. The local players are very skilful, and the best among them are often poached by top European teams within a couple of years. There are occasionally international fixtures, too, with the greatest energy reserved for matches against regional rival Nigeria: Ghana's national side has been going through an uneven patch of late, but they are still capable of entertaining play. You would be wise to pay for the most expensive tickets, since there have been instances of trouble in the crowded lower areas, most tragically the deaths of some 100 people in 2001, after police overreactions to minor trouble sparked panic, stampedes and a deadly crush.
