Winneba Beach

by atufft

The Sports College at Winneba is one place where teachers and college professors might want to stop for a day. The facilities are limited, but there is a guest house that can be rented or borrowed for modest donation. From there, one can catch a ride into town and visit the fishing village. Few tourists are there, but curious children and fishermen fixing their boats and nets are worth an afternoon. Take a leisurely pace along the beach and catch an image like this. In a country that is itself off the beaten path, Winneba appears to be even more so for tourists. Virtualtourist.com doesn't even list it among the popular destinations. See more in my Winneba pages.

Bolgatanga and the Upper Northeast Region

by atufft

Bolgatanga is not the sort of town tourists flock to, but there many comfortable guest houses and hotels to stay in, and the variety of villages and other activities outside of town are sure to please anyone who visits. The town has good hospitality. I have more information at my Bolgatanga pages.

Wa and Hippos on the Upper Volta River

by atufft

The Upper West region is one of the most remote corners of Ghana and most tourists don't get there. Too bad. The old Muslim mud mosques, hippos on the Black Volta River at Weichau, and Lobi tribal villages here make this destination very worthwhile. Since the two letter town of Wa, which is the capitol of the region, isn't on the Virtualtourist.com map, you'll have to see my pages images and insights on this underappreciated corner of Ghana. This is a great route for entering Burkina Faso, incidentally.

Cape Coast: Slave Fortress City

by atufft

Any Americans who visit Ghana will want to explore the slave dungeons at Cape Coast. The museum is very good, bringing a complete closure for this most painful flaw in American History. And yet, the local people appear in their faces to be the roots of a very important cultural part of the USA and all of the Americas. See the pages on Cape Coast for more images and details.

Bolgatanga: Capitol of the Northeast

by atufft

Bolgatanga is a pleasant little town with enough to do at night and plenty of excursionary activities in the day for at least a few days. I have a good friend with a shop in Bolga, as it's called for short, who came to visit us. Her International Travelers Inn is a regular stop for Peace Corps Volunteers and adventure tourists. See my pages for Bolgatanga for more tips and advice.

Kakum National Park

by atufft

The small Kakum National Park has a skywalk, something I've seen only in Costa Rica. The tropical forest area is very close to Cape Coast, and so it is covered in those pages and tips. But, this small park is easy to like for a quick hike. Some 20 Elephants are known to inhabit the park.

Mole National Park

by atufft

The largest park in the country is also one of the most remote places to go in Ghana. Many locals have never been there because the trip into Mole is only for the most adventuresome tourists. Having said that, it's well worth the effort. In fact riding the rusty buses to get there is half the fun. At Mole, there is a modest hotel with swimming pool and restaurant and a great view of a watering hole where the elephants shower themselves. It's a rich ecosystem with plenty of wildlife roaming happily near the camp. See the pages and tips on Mole National Park.

Kumasi: Center of Ashanti Tribal Kingdom

by atufft

Kumasi is Ghana's second largest city, and in most respects more beautiful. The "Garden City" as it's know is very spread out, but in the city center transportation and shopping are close together. This is a great place to shop for African fabrics and clothes. Nearby also is the cultural arts center where tourists can watch the crafts being made. The Kumasi stadium is a good venue for soccer fans. It's easy to make friends in Kumasi. See my pages and tips on Kumasi for more details.
