Aburi

by Pieter11

Aburi is a small town just north from Accra. It was originally built by the British during the 19th century. Aburi is situated on top of a one of the green hills in this area. The climate is much cooler then in the capital and the rest of the Ghanaian coast and there are no malaria mosquitos here, because the temperatures are too low. This is why the British chose this place to build a sanatorium and resthouse. Later, in 1890, they started with a large botanical garden around the sanatorium.Today the Aburi Botanical Garden is the main attraction of the town, and the beautiful old sanatorium is still standing right in the middle of the park. But the town is also a perfect base for a visit to Ghana's oldest cocoa farm, and for an active tour on a mountainbike. For more information about this nice little town, check out my Aburi-pages.

Bolgatanga

by Pieter11

Bolgatanga is a fast growing city in the very north of Ghana, and it is the capital of the region it is situated in: the Upper East Region. Bolga, as every Ghanaian calls the city, doesn't have a lot of touristic attractions, but it is a nice place to walk through on your way to more interesting places in the neighbourhood. In the direct surroundings of Bolga you can visit the famous Sacred Crocodiles of Paga, the painted houses of Sirigu or the mystical Tongo Hills. For more information you should have a look at my Bolga-pages

Accra

by Pieter11

Accra is the capital of Ghana and is situated at the very south of the country, at the Atlantic Coast. The city has over one million inhabitants and is the absolute centre of the country. It has the nation's only international airport, it has the base of politics and it is very, very Ghana.Accra is everything Ghana has to offer, but bigger. Every city or town in Ghana has a Tro-Tro station: Accra has at least 5 of them. Ghana is a perfect place to buy West-African handicraft, Accra has the biggest market. Traffic in Ghana is always very chaotic, Accra is the worst. Every town in Ghana has a colourful market, Accra's markets are among the biggest.Although the city doesn't have a lot of popular tourist attractions and it is very hectic, you can spend at least a couple of days here to get to know the real citylife of Ghana. For more information about the city, check out my Accra-pages.

Larabanga

by Pieter11

Larabanga is a small, dusty and famous village in the Northern Region of Ghana, roughly between the cities Wa and Tamale, and right under Mole N.P. Larabanga doesn't have a lot to offer except for its old mosque. This famous building is the only reason why you should visit the village, but because of its location very close to Mole, it's easy to combine both. Besides the mosque the village has a very picturesque centre, with only mud-and-sticks houses, a lot of goats and generally a great example of what a Northern Ghanaian village look like. For more information you can check out my Larabanga-page

Mole N.P.

by Pieter11

Mole National Park is not the most visited, but definitely the most special wildlifepark in Ghana. It has been established in 1958 and it keeps almost 400 different species of animals in an area of 4840 km2. It is situated in the Northern Region of Ghana, about 200 km. west from Tamale.Too bad, it is very difficult to get around in the biggest park of the park, so it's very unlikely that you will see its hippo's, buffalo's, lions or leopards. You are very likely to see elephants though, just as different species of monkeys and antilopes. The best way to get to Mole is to travel from Tamale. From there you can take a direct bus to the park. More information about the park and its wild inhabitants is available on my Mole-page

Tamale

by Pieter11

Tamale is the capital of Ghana's Northern Region. It is the city where I used to live for a couple of months, and the one I know best of all Ghanaian places. Tamale itself does not have a lot to offer for the standard tourist, but it is a nice place to get used to the Northern Ghanaian culture: the people are friendly, the traffic is relatively calm and a lot of day- and weekendtrips are possible with Tamale as a base: Mole National Park, Bolgatanga, Paga and the Burkina-border, Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary, Wa, Kintampo Falls, and so on...For much more information about Tamale, check out my Tamale-page.

After Rainforest

by carnsoreboxer

You will be hot!!! Drive past Hans Cottage back onto main road and take a right hand turn and stay on road until you eventually come to a sign for Coconut Grove. Follow the signposts and you will come to an amazing hotel right on the beach, terrific food and superb facilities

Rainforest

by carnsoreboxer

If time is on your side a trip to Kakum park rainforest is a must. 3 hours drive from Accra, driver may be hired easily. Most importantly travel early and request a personal guide on your arrival. Abraham Samson otherwise know as Fiifi was ours and I couldn't recommend him more highly. The canopy walk is amazing as is the feeling of pride upon completion. It is also possible to camp here overnight with your guide and see all the animals when they wake in the morning

Visit a Market

by bcuffari

When I visited the "overhead market" located near "Circle" on the very outskirts of Accra, I was terrified. I was terrified because I was the only person of my color present, and I, along with all of the Ghanaians buying and selling at the market, knew I was the wealthiest person there. I was naturally afraid of being robbed, and my friend Joe's advice of wearing my back-pack at the front of my body only reinforced that fear. After two or three market visits, however, my fears subsided as I became more comfortable with the circumstances. The Ghanaians selling at the market are by far the most quick and saavy marketers that I have ever had contact with. As soon as I would look at an item, the merchant selling that item would instantaneously jump up to sell or convince me to buy. Once I learned the native term for "white man", I could hear it being yelled from all different directions....

Attend A Wedding

by bcuffari

I had a wonderful time observing and participating in the Presbyterian wedding traditions. I was not fortunate enough to visit any other types of weddings, but I gained a wealth of information from the one I was fortunate enough to visit. The hired band was absolutely wonderful. They could play as well as any famous band in the world. When it was time for the attendees to give donations to the bride and groom, the people formed a single-file line, one section at a time, and danced by themselves on their way to the donation basket. Some didn't dance at all, some moved a little bit with the rhythm and others danced as hard as they possible could. It was wonderful to watch. I felt a little bit uncomfortable due to no one's knowledge of why I was present, but they all welcomed me regardless. My friend Joe was one of the readers, and all of the readings and preaching were done in the native...
