Visit The Port At Tema

by bcuffari

I was fortunate enough to have a connection with a retired naval commander, Commander Humphrey Omang, who was the uncle of my good friend, Joseph Oman Ocquaye, and he was more than happy to spend a day taking us around the port located in the city of Tema. The city's very beautiful, and the high-rise apartments are wonderful to visit. As for the port, it is in dire need of financial and sanitary help. There were many men working there while we received a tour, and I was told they work fourteen, fifteen and even sixteen hours per day for very little money. They mostly clean and maintain the ships, and are not provided with a quality facility for washing and using the toilet. The Atlantic Ocean water by the port was filthy, and I knew it wasn't the fault of any people present there. It was simply a direct result of a country that could not afford to maintain its port properly. Of course,...

Visit a Church

by bcuffari

Visiting a Christian church in Ghana was a wonderful experience for me, and will be for any person who is open-minded. I would have enjoyed visiting a mosque as well, but I only had access to the Christian community. As for the Christian church services, the people were extremely friendly and welcoming to me. One of the most strikingly beautiful aspects is the hand-made clothes they wear to the services. They all look so beautiful on Sundays, and the vibes one feels in the air are enough to bring peace to the heart of the most restless person. It is not anything like I expected it to be. In African American churches, the basis is mostly dancing, singing and celebration, but while these things did go on in Ghanaian churches, there was a much more serious atmosphere. They did the dancing and signing in the beginning before the sermon started, and the bands, if present in the church one...

Visit a Rural Area

by bcuffari

Of all the things to do in Ghana, visiting a rural area is quite possibly one that will have the heaviest impact on one's life. It is not, however, an easy feat to accomplish. For example, it took my friend, Joseph Oman Ocquaye, and I eighteen hours to arrive in the Upper East Region by means of the STC intercity transport system. It is important to note that there will most likely not be any hotels or anything of that sort present in the rural areas, because the poverty is simply at a disturbing level. If, however, one is fortunate enough, as I was, to befriend a native, then one may just be able to work something out with a person or family living at the rural area in terms of accomodation. A doctor in Bawku was more than willing to accomodate us for about a week, and he was ever so graceful and hospitable. We visited several women farming groups that were abandoned by their men while...

Parks, Reserves and Sanctuaries

by bcuffari

One obvious activity that each person visiting Ghana should do is to visit the national parks and reserves. The most popular ones that I'm aware of are: Kakum National Park, Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary, Bobiri Forest Reserve, Bui National Park, Baobong-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary, and Mole National Park, but I'm sure there are others as well. Unfortunately, I was only able to visit Kakum National Park. As for Kakum, the rain forest was enormous and dense, but there was not much room for freedom while there. First and foremost, I was charged, fairly, extra cedis for being a non-Ghanaian (90,000 cedis total). Also important to note, a student who possesses a valid student I.D. will only have to pay the fee of 50,000 cedis if a non-Ghanaian. The staff will most likely not allow you to take the trails without an official guide. It is not, however, any reason to not enjoy every second of being in the...

Mingle With the Natives

by bcuffari

Of all the wonderful things to do in Ghana, the people, in my opinion, are the most attractive part. They are, simply put, the most friendly, loving and sensitive people I've ever come into contact with. They were totally shocked when they found out I was an American who was staying with locals, eating native dishes and simply participating in their daily routines. Many Westerners, at their own losses, shy away from the people, dishes and activities that are a part of the everyday lives of the natives. They love to laugh, and will accept you, unlike most Americans, for who you are; they never judge a person based on shallow qualities like looks or money. I met many people with whom I maintain regular contact, and I'm still shocked to this day with the ease in which they lovingly accepted me. I will continue to repeat it throughout this page, but the children are beautiful little things....

African hair style

by bobkey

Ask your hotel if they know any local hairdressers. Book an appointment and ask them to come to your hotel,Tell them the colour of your hair so they will bring the same colour extentions and pay their return taxi fare. Two hairdressers will turn up and plait you hair in approximatly 50 plait's or how you want it. This process takes around 4hours and costs 40$ all in.This african hair style last's for about a month.

Budamburam Liberian Refugee Camp

by idiosingularity

An approximately 14 year old Liberian refugee camp, its a place not many would venture. But, its an interesting experience for those who want to go off the map places. The camp is more like a settlement now, as people don't even think of going anymore. I met some American volunteers there who told me a bit about it and showed me around. It's about a 45 minute trotro ride outside of Accra. If you go there, note the rock quarry on the way, where even children sit outside all day and dig the hard stone.

Larabanga Mud Mosque

by atufft

The oldest building in Ghana is at Larabanga. The exact date of construction is unclear, but certainly this building is many centures old. I liked just hanging out in the village as we waited for the bus to Wa. See the pages on Larabanga and Mole National Park for more details. The two are part of the same trip.

Slave castles

by Whoopi

Along the coast there are many old slavecastles and fortresses. The most fameous one is Elmina castle. It is the biggest but I don't recommend it as it is made too much of a touristattraction. Cape Coast castle on the other hand is very interesting. They have preserved the horrible castle so well that is is almost as the slaves are still in the dungeons.... You can still see the marks on the solid stone walls from desperate slaves clawing to get out, and you can also see how the slavetraders' quarters are conveniently above the female slave dungeon so they could pick any girl they wanted for the night..
