Train Kumasi-Takoradi

by morgaine_anastasia

It's a cheap way to get to Takoradi from Kumasi. Also it is a night train so it will save a hotel. Allthough you must be prepared on a long delay, it is worth it. You go straight through the rainforest and small villages. THe train stops often at some bigger villages where all kinds of people try to sell things from their head. So the longer your delay the more you see. THe train should have arrived early in the morning at 8:00 but arrived at 14:00.

transportation

by abdulwa

there is a lots of road accidents in ghana and the best thing to do is always take the STC when travelling from accra to its outskirts like kumasi, capecoast, tamale etc. and make sure you get a taxi when going to an unknown destination.also the trotro helps when going to a place which is just near by and you know your way.it help save money.it is the cheapest you can find.you can also get a radio taxi to take you around town.there are a lot of government buses now and it is cheaper, more helpful, safer and convenient, and they ply in accra and its surroundings.

In Ghana the "TroTro" is a good way to travel fast

by atufft

The Ghana bus system is good, but I prefer the tro-tros for a 3 to 4 hour trip. These are minivan's actually, and like similar transport in many third world countries, they provide the cheapest and fastest way to get around. Find the stand, examine the windshield for the name of the place you want to go, and then climb in. The driver will collect the money and get going as soon as the van fills up with people. Sometimes, the driver really wants to pack the van full, or the van sits and waits for only one more person before departing. No problem, pay the driver for the extra seat. The price of this transportation is about $1- per hour, a bargain in any industrialized nation. Gas prices could spoil this in Ghana though. As for safety, the drivers have their lives invested in their vehicles and for the most part are quite professional. More than a few are daredevil drivers with religious...

Taxi fare negotiation

by VJSmith

If you travel to Ghana as a white person, know that you will be expected to pay a higher taxi fare always. Try to ask locals what the normal price would be, and negotiate with the driver before you get in for something just slightly higher. If he wont budge, let him go, taxis in the cities are everywhere and they don´t hesitate to honk and let you know they are there.

Tro-Tro ride of your life

by VJSmith

Beaten up old buses, ie tro-tros, are the main form of transportation in Accra and for most shorter journeys aruond Ghana. This consists of being crammed into a rusty bus with a man hanging out the sliding door who calls for stops and collects your money. An experience not to be missed, and definately the cheapest way to get around.

Going to Mole National Parc

by janroggen

going to en from Mole national ParcIf you dont have your own transport, there are two ways to reach the parc. You can either take the daily bus from tamale or take a taxi from tamale. We took the bus...we took the STC bus from Kumasi to Tamale and then the bus from tamale to Mole (the bus and trotro station in tamale is next tot the stc station).Be sure to have seats for the trip to Mole, because even if Mole seems to be pretty close to Tamale, the trip will take about 7 hours on a dusty and bumpy road and there will be approx 60 persons and tons of luggage in this little bus...It sure was an experience we´ll never forget, but keep in mind that we were only smiling because we arrived ;) And we knew we had to do the same trip again... (we managed to do the Mole-Ouaga trip in one day!)so if you are in a group, I´d consider chartering a taxi... (wich will only take half of the time I think)

Tro-Tro

by Alpha_Ghana

Tro-Tro is a name coming from Three-Three, when a trip was three pesawas a long time ago. The tro-Tro is a kind of van, like Toyota HIACE, which has been customised to carry more than 25 people in place of nine, plus goats and bundles on the roof. It is the cheapest way to travel. As an adventurer, you should try once, but I don't advise it on long journeys or when they can drive fast. Maintenance is not a known word in Ghana. But you can make a ACCRA-CAPE COAST, 100 KM for 50 USc They paint psalms or gospel words on the windows, no light or indicator, door close with ropes when they have doors.

Taxis

by Alpha_Ghana

Taxis:Taxis are special: you have plenty cars riding everywhere. You recognize taxis quickly because the four wings are red and the car is yellow or grey, sometimes some other colours. There is no counter in the car, so before entering the cab, you have to negociate the price. As a white, you pay more, but it is normal, isn't it? Most taxi driver don't own their car. They have to pay a daily fee to the car owner, a rich man. He can keep the balance but he has to pay all costs like benzine and oil.A short drop is 2000 - 3000 cedis. You can have a taxi for one hour or more. For a Ghanaian, the fare is 10000-11000, but you will pay less than 15000 (imagine it is around 2USD!).Sometimes, some drivers don't know the city very well and as they are looking for their way, you enjoy a free tour of the city. Some taxi drivers use their car as a common car, for instance they only drive from one circle...

Don't Be in A haste

by Paul-linus

TRANSPORTATION AND COMMUNICATIONThe transportation system is underdeveloped. A rail system connects Accra with Kumasi and Sekondi, and a fairly good bus network connects major cities. There are also some domestic airplane flights. Most people do not own cars but rely on public transportation or other means of travel. The tro-tro is a public minibus used for traveling shorter distances; taxis are also available. Mail and phone services are not reliable; the government is hoping to improve the communication systems through private sector investment. The transportation system is underdeveloped. Getting around towns

by sarahandgareth

In Accra especially, you can save quite a bit of money over the course of your trip if you take tro-tros instead of taxis. Tro-tros are minibuses which service fixed routes, and which have a fixed fare system, though they are operated privately. They generally stay on the main arteries, and the conductor touts for business by yelling the destination out the window, or using one of the hand signals that locals employ to describe destinations. You can flag the appropriate tro-tro down using the same signals, or just waving your hand if you hear your destination being yelled out. It sounds complicated, but look at the locals and you'll figure it out quickly - and eliminate the constant hassles of having to haggle with taxi drivers. Tro-tros are not very safe, however, and are often extremely overcrowded, so sometimes it's worth paying more for the bus on a long journey (around town, taxis...
