Getting around towns
In Accra especially, you can save quite a bit of money over the course of your trip if you take tro-tros instead of taxis. Tro-tros are minibuses which service fixed routes, and which have a fixed fare system, though they are operated privately. They generally stay on the main arteries, and the conductor touts for business by yelling the destination out the window, or using one of the hand signals that locals employ to describe destinations. You can flag the appropriate tro-tro down using the same signals, or just waving your hand if you hear your destination being yelled out. It sounds complicated, but look at the locals and you'll figure it out quickly - and eliminate the constant hassles of having to haggle with taxi drivers.
