Getting around towns

by sarahandgareth

In Accra especially, you can save quite a bit of money over the course of your trip if you take tro-tros instead of taxis. Tro-tros are minibuses which service fixed routes, and which have a fixed fare system, though they are operated privately. They generally stay on the main arteries, and the conductor touts for business by yelling the destination out the window, or using one of the hand signals that locals employ to describe destinations. You can flag the appropriate tro-tro down using the same signals, or just waving your hand if you hear your destination being yelled out. It sounds complicated, but look at the locals and you'll figure it out quickly - and eliminate the constant hassles of having to haggle with taxi drivers. Tro-tros are not very safe, however, and are often extremely overcrowded, so sometimes it's worth paying more for the bus on a long journey (around town, taxis...

Trotro

by Whoopi

getting around in Ghana can be tricky. If you take "dropping" with a taxi you'll be sure you get where you are going. It is cheap compared to western prices but yet most expensive in Ghana. If you take trotro, it will cost you practically nothing. They are like public busses, there is always one coming and they have a "mate" hanging out the window shouting where they are going. If your destination is on they way, make a sign and they stop anywhere and take you on board....A bit crowded and warm though...but very nice, I always got a friend driving trotro:)PS: Skirt in a trotro is a very bad idea, especially if it is a short one...!!!

TRAIN

by seratonin

A great experience is toi travel by train within Ghana. Often they are slow, so that it is fuster to use a bus instead. But it is nice to travel slowly trough the forests and see the lively, colorful stations.

By Air there are many airlines that go to Ghana from all over the world form London Ghana Airways flys regular from Heathrow Airport and British Airways (Which I prefer) flys from Gatwick.Taxi. They are readley avaliable and can be stopped almost anywhere. the Taxis are easiley reconized as they have there front and back wings painted yellow. Or you can travel from pick up points via a mini bus known locally as a trot trot.

One of the least expensive from the USA is taking Ghana Airways direct flight from JFK to Accra. Watch out though... they are a bit disorganized and flights may be delayed or unexpectedly moved. They do have, however, an excellent safety record and their flight safety record is the highest.Taxis ot tro-tros (small vans -- if you don't mind being crammed into a van with 12 - 16 other people!! It is the cheapest transportation, however.) Between major cities, the buses are fair. A few cities are served by airlines within Ghana, but they only fly a few days a week.

by plane to Accra

by Christel

Ship your own car and sell it before leaving or buy a used car. Advantage: You can take friends, you can go anywhere.TroTro (minibus), fun but exhausting and takes time. They don't leave before they're full. It is sometimes hard to find out the destinations.STC-Bussses. Comfortable, they connect the major cities in Ghana.
