The drummers started to drum, so it was time for dancing.Many of the Ghanaian volunteers were also good dancers and danced together with the villagers. They tried to explain us the meaning of the dance and were very willing to teach. But some dances were rather complicated.
When we returned from the boatride we heard allready the drumming in the village.Nice to hear and to look and .... time for dancing. While we were listening, some villagers prepared in the meantime our food.
In the village at the lakeside we were invited for a boattrip at the Lake Volta. It was a very nice experience to sail In small narrow boats between the drowned trees.We all returned safe without wet feet.
It was very nice to be invited in this village. So we could have a close look at their daily life On the picture you can see, that under one roof the women do the cooking, the family is living. Also the storage of food is under the same roof.
In the afternoon after the work in Nkonya Wuropong we were invited in a small village at the lake-side of Lake Volta.from Nkonya Wuropong it was an one hour walk on narrow bush paths.At the moment we saw some more light between the trees, we reached the first huts of the village. At that moment the villagers came to welcome us.
After nearly 10 years in 1989 I visited the Volta Region again. My fellow travellers liked to see ''my village'' an camp there.Because of very bad road conditions, allready too much delay and the aggravating illness of our driver (he had to go very fast to a hospital in Togo) we didn't make it. There only remained 3 miles very bad road to overcome.....
Everyday a lot of people from the village came to work with us. Mostly women.One of the conditions to get a voluntary project is that also the villagers participate in the work. These women from Nkonya with their headpans had a big contribution in cleaning the yard. They love to sing (and sometimes to dance) during the work.
After the dancing and before we had to walk back to Nkonya Wuropong, we got a nice meal of fufu with a palmnut soup.The first thing you learn is to eat always with your right hand (the left one is for dirty things).Fufu is a mix of pounded cassave and plantain.
The work for the building of the community centre we had to do was: cleaning the yard, bringing many, many headpans with concrete to the bricklayers and the most exciting .... pounding stones within a wooden box.Always curious the next day of your pounded and dried stones were strong enoungh and did't fall apart in many pieces.
It's nice to stay for a few weeks in one village and to do voluntary work with a lot of Ghanaian volunteers from all over the country: many students, teachers, some farmers. Most of them find this a good way to spend their summerholidays, doing good work, having a place to sleep and very important to be supplied of food. The purpose of the Ghanaian organisation was that youngsters of all kind of tribes worked together. The name of the voluntary organisation in Ghana is Volu. If you like to do this kind of short-term voluntary work, you have to register in your own home -country.The dutch organisation is SIW (Stichting Internationale Werkkampen). SIW gave a preparation time of 9 months, to learn about the third world and Africa, to read African litterature and so on.In Ghana I met also volunteers from Denmark, Germany and Great Britain.
