Men in Black

by Alpha_Ghana

Since the last elections, GHANA POLICE changed fully. Imagine Ku Kux Klan in the fifties in deep South Caroline USA, If you are a white foreigner, they behave the same with you. Of course, they don't burn you or hang you, but they maltreat you, steal your money and fabricate for you to be guilty. They just want your money. The justice is always of the side of the Police when there is a problem. There is no real investigation. If you don't want problem, pay the police. It is the only reason why the fabricate, to take your money.

Beware of Malaria !!!

by Butterflytribe

Avoiding the bites of Anopheles mosquitoes (which usually bite only between dusk and dawn) is the best way to prevent infection. -Apply insect repellent to exposed skin. The recommended repellent contains 20%-35% DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide). -Wear long-sleeved clothing and long pants if you are outdoors at night. -Use a mosquito net over the bed if your bedroom is not air-conditioned or screened. For additional protection, treat the mosquito net with the insecticide permethrin. -Spray an insecticide or repellent on clothing, as mosquitoes may bite through thin clothing. -Spray permethrin or a similar insecticide in your bedroom before going to bed. Note: Vitamin B and ultrasound devices do not prevent mosquito bites. Travelers to areas where malaria occurs should discuss their travel plans with a physician well before departure. Drugs to prevent malaria are usually prescribed for...

Traveling by tro-tro

by sarahandgareth

Tro-tros are a very handy way to get around Accra and beyond, but do bear in mind that the driving standards can be very variable. Some drivers are attentive and skilful, but others are genuinely wild and crazy, and when accidents happen they can be catastrophic due to the combination of overcrowded vehicles and high speed. One tro-tro driver I experienced drove at high speed through a herd of cattle crossing a major road, amazingly missing every single animal, then drove on the wrong side of the road for several miles, and had a race with another driver, the two of them blocking all oncoming traffic. When we reached Accra, one of my fellow passengers looked at me and asked, with a smile, 'What do you think of the driving here?!'

Accra bag snatching

by NettiABM

Accra is generally a very laid-back and safe place. However when walking down the road, watch out for cars/bikes coming up behind you and passengers snatching your bags+drive off! In case of theft it is a good idea to report to the local police station and ask for a statement - you might need this for your insurance. Policemen might ask for a small "tip" for this service ...

Ghana is a very safe Country....

by evliyasems

Ghana is a very safe Country. The hospitality of Ghanaians will amaze you However:CrimeCrime As in every human society, Accra has its share of crime, though it is generally regarded as being relatively safe and peaceful. Lately, however, the rate of crime seems to be rising. The police is working hard to arrest the situation. Be careful of pickpockets, and armed robbers. ClothingWear light summer clothing preferably in cotton. Avoid synthetic fabric in all seasons. HealthBoil your non-tap drinking water.Avoid street food and water. Be very careful of what enters your body. Be weary of prostitutes, and remember that AIDS is real, so do protect yourself if you must entertain them. Remember 'prevention is better then cure'. Always move in a group. Money ExchangeChange your foreign money at the forex bureaux. No matter the amount, count before leaving premises. Good bureaux have counting...

Make sure you get a visa, and...

by rcf100

Make sure you get a visa, and your yellow fever jab, other jabs are recommended such as typhoid and hepatitus B. Only eat at hotels that appear clean coz it doesn't matter who owns them, if you're not happy don't eat there - I once got food poisoning from a government run hotel. Taxi's are reliable enough, but again there are no meters usually so you'll be ripped off - agree a price before you get in, and again haggle on it. Only get a taxi that has the customary yellow front and back side bits and doesn't look in too bad condition. Also, the sea is very very dangerous, do not swim out to far as the under current is lethal - only go to the major beach places - you'lll have to pay but there will be more people around, and it's likely to be a bit safer, some beaches have there own life guards also.

Get all the shots your physician recommends. (Yellow Fever is mandatory.) Make sure you get Malaria pills even if you intend to stay in major cities. If you intend to be sexually active take major precautions. It is estimated more than 400,000 Ghanaians now carry the AIDs virus (recent statistic from Ghanain media).North, be careful of cholera outbreaks. If going on safari or touring game reserves be cautious: there are poisonous snakes and other animals that can kill you. Medical treatment would probably be too little, too late. Of course, that's part of the adventure! :-)

When I was in Ghana for the first time I realised that my visa was only valid for 30 days after 3 weeks. So I had to extend it at the immigration office. Normally it takes weeks before it is done. Unfortunately my plane was leaving in 6 days. My husband had to talk with an 'important person' and give some christmas present and it was done in 3 days!Try to stay cool concerning bribe and christmas presents. It is totally normal there. Never say directly no, it is considered as unpolite. Put it in a nice form, like 'next time' If you don't want to give presents find a polite excuse. Nobody will be offended.Ask for a present for yourself in return.Don't follow strangers to places you don#t know. Don't leave things, bags in the car. If you know ghanians follow their advices. They know their country and countrymen.Never use your left hand to eat or greet somebody. It is considered dirty.Don't...

by jamesgroleau

Beware where you take pictures. Never snap shots near 'official buildings' (airport included). Never take pictures of people in uniform without expressed permission. Don't use your left hand for anything - it's considered rude. (I exaggerate a bit, but I'm left-handed!) Fortunately, most of the people in the cities understand that 'westerners' are just different, and accept you graciously anyway.
