  • Art at Thika Falls

    Thika Shopping

In the back of the Thika Falls resort, there is a craft village with about 10 stalls. Also there are a couple stalls at the entrance. Several shops within this complex have original art in the form of paintings or pencil drawings. Original art. Depends on the size and medium used. Bargain hard and you will get excellent prices.

  • Fresh pineapples

    Thika Shopping

On the north side of the main road thru Thika, the Del Monte shop offers fresh pineapple and a variety of juices. Grab an absolutely fresh dead-ripe pineapple for only 50 shillings. You won't believe how good it tastes!

  • Beads, beads, beads at 14 Falls

    Thika Shopping

This fellow had nice necklaces and bracelets made from natural things. About 100 to 200 shillings each. Bargain hard!

  • Lazy Susan

    Aberdare National Park Local Customs

It is the first - and last - time I have seen a table with a gliding "Lazy Susan" in the centre of the table for passing condiments and side dishes. Basically, a small strip of the centre of the table was converted to glide on runners. A great idea!

'Professor' Lopez demonstrates the coriolus effect on water exiting a funnel (with a toothpick laying on top of the water) at three points: above the equator, at the equator, below the equator. Above and below the equator the water went clock- and counter-clock-wise (can't remember which happened for which). At the equator, the toothpick didn't turn to the left or right.

Unique Suggestions: Take this as pure fun, hokus pokus, or even verifiable science -- it certainly makes going over the equator an experience that is more memorable than driving over a line in the road. If you wish, certificates are sold to proove your accomplishment, and there is the obligatory craft store, where, with a little bargaining, you may come home with a keepsake you will always treasure. At least the photo opportunity is free!

Fun Alternatives: Drive on if you will, and know they can't pull the wool over your eyes. You've crossed the equator either way!
