One palm still the best boozer in Mtwapa. The front of the premises disappeared earlier this year as the local council decided that the outer wall of the building was too near the road that they wanted to widen so bulldozed it. The building has been rejigged and there is now a small upstairs area.

If you travel north of Mombasa about 45 minutes through the estates of Bombalulu, Bamburi and then Shanzu and then cross the bridge over the creek, you will have arrived in the town of Mtwapa.
Mtwapa is an odd but pleasant place straddling both sides of the Mombasa Malindi highway. This dusty little coastal town is odd because this seems to be the town of choice to live for an ever growing German community. So along side the bare breasted and bare footed Giriama women in the market place you will come across the odd pink faced, sock and sandal wearing German. The place where they are most obvious is the Casuarina night club.
This is not a bad night club. The big circular dance-floor is covered with a huge makuti roof with the DJ’s booth halfway up the wall. They seem to play a mix of music from Lingala, Bongo Flava, Reggae, and some kitsch Euro pop for especially for the Teutons. There isn’t usually an entrance fee but drinks here are more expensive than else where in Mtwapa. The entrance to Casaurina opens out on to the main Mombasa Malindi road so it is easy to catch a Matatu to and from town from outside the main gate.
