Forget Traveller cheques

by JimKnopf

If you think about to take Traveller cheques to Kenya, better you forget this. In Nairobi is no bank which is changing them. There is only one changing buero and even they could make trouble if they are not agree with your signature. What ever happened last years, but I tried 10 banks and got nothing. They never change Traveller cheques again. If you come from Europe better you take Euros and change them there, and this for a good rate. Otherwise try to pay with Visa. But never forget, if you come with so much money or carrying some credit cards with you, be always careful about them, have a good place where no one can take it so easily, like a small back which you can hang around your neck under your t-shirt.

Using mobile phone in Kenya

by georeiser

The mobile phone works great in the cities in Kenya (September 2008). The connection is good. But the roaming price for a foreign SIM card is expensive. I should have called from a local SIM card with prepaid credit. I talked with several people who bought a Kenyan SIM card in one of the many phone shops here. This worked perfect. You can recieve calls without credit, so it doesn't cost you anything. It's also cheap to buy credit. The country code is +254.

ATM - minibank

by georeiser

The ATM service in Kenya is good. The terminals are located outside the banks. There are no credit card fraud in Kenya yet (September 2008). I had no problem using a credit card in Nairobi and Mombasa, and recommend using it.

Visa application

by Krumel

Ok, this is not exactly my favourite thing about Kenya, but I didn't know what other category than "general tips" I should stick this in :-)Instead of sending your passport off to an embassy and applying for a visa upfront you can also get your visa on arrival in Kenya. You need to fill out one of the visa forms before you go to the immigration counter, hand over the cash ($50 or €40) and off you go. You can also download the form in advance from the website of the Kenyan embassy, which means you won't have to search for a pen at the airport, as they are usually in short supply, and you also get ahead in the queue of everyone who still has to fill out the form on arrival, and shorten your waiting time.http://www.kenyahighcommission.net/pdfiles/V12007.pdf

Safari

by morabo

A great experience! We were twice in Kenya and we've had various safari experiences, but we really have to recommend Julius JT safaris! Having heard about Julius on internet, we decided to plan this years safari with him. He arranged for us two outstanding trips this year, perfectly corresponding to our special wishes. Best prices, absolutely fair treatment, plenty of information and superb service along with family atmosphere makes JT Safaris (www.julius-safaris.com) simply the best operator you can imagine. We'll trust Julius on every other Kenya holiday in the future. Big five

Gifts and Donations

by peterson2008

Hello Tina,It's a very good idea to take with you some gifts in kenya.i stay in kenya where i run a conservation project and host volunteers. It is very good to support the community by giving them the gift and you will feel very appreciated by the locals. They gift you give will highly depend with the community of the place you visit.I can advice you to give gifts to locals but if possible try not to give to individuals because they will later sell them in exchange of money.Through your guide try and find a charitable organizations, local schools, hospitals, organized youth groups etc and give them whatever you might be having.By so doing you will be of great help to the community.Don't forget to bring some sanitary towels for the girls in local schools, very important.most of girls cannot afford them, you can easily get them in any supermarket in kenya.Enjoy your holiday!!!! I love being...

Surgestions on itinerary

by fabriz09

My fellow forum colleagues might have known the conditions of roads some a few months ago but the road to mara now is far better. It is being re- carpeted.Depending on which flight you arriving with severally my clients have proceeded on safari after arriving with an early flight. What you need is a place t o freshen up abit and some breakfast.Your itinerary is o key only that from Aberdares to Amboseli[Day 5] thats a very long journey. Spend that afternoon in Nairobi doing excursions You wont have time do that while coming from Mombasa. The Next day [Day 6] depart for amboseli.Day 7 Depart to Tsavo. That means you have to add a day for your safari.Which translates to Day 8 is when you depart to Mombasa.Remember Carnivore Restaurant is an ideal place for dinner before you depart. For a good tour company try Mihon Destinations services. Peoples hospitality.
