Looking for tour operators

by Krumel

A good start to find out whether the company you have chosen is reputable is to check whether they are a member of the Kenyan Association of Tour Operators: www.katokenya.orgHowever, as there are certain restrictions on who can join (e.g. certain number of employees) many smaller companies cannot join and are therefore not listed on the website, although this doesn't necessarily mean that they are not trustworthy.

Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri

by croisbeauty

Field Marshal, Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri (1920 - 1957) was a Kenyan rebel leader who fought against British colonization in Kenya. He was convicted and executed by the British Colonial Government, sentenced to death by hanging and his remains are buried in unmarked grave at Kamiti Prison. For the Kikuyus (largest tribe in Kenya), Kimathi was a freedom figter and the leading fighter for Kenyan freedom. Ironicaly but truth, for British he was nothing but the terrorist and that point of vew hasn't changed even today.People should read the book by Caroline Elkins, it is called "Imperial Reckoning: The Untold Story of Britan's Gulag in Kenya", in which the author argued that during the Mau Mau Uprising the British detained over one million Kikuyu in what essentialy were concentration camps, exposing them to untold suffering, torture and death. The monument to Kimathi was erected in 2007 in...

Kenyans

Jamhuri ya Kenya (Republic of Kenya) is official name of the country in kswahili language. Actually, k in front of swahili indicates Kenyan dialect because swahili language is widely spoken in Tanzania and some in Uganda too.Kenya occupies huge territory with over 35 million of inhabitants whom derived from one of 110 different tribes. The biggest tribe (people) is Kikuyu, also called Gikuyu, making 18% of the population, the second biggest is Luhya (15%) and their close relatives Luo (14%), following by Kalenjin (12%), Kamba (11%), Kisii (7%) and so on.Although emblem of Kenya and most famous tribe, especially to Europeans, Maasais belong to a minor ethnic group. In whole of Kenya there are no more than 600.000 Maasai people. There is another interesting fact to those who are fond of athletics. Great majority of excellent Kenyan athlets derived from Turkana tribe, also minor ethnic...

Mau Mau Uprising (1952-1960)

by croisbeauty

After almost half of the century the speculations still exist regarding backronym Mau Mau and what it really means. According to some interpretations it comes out of swahili words "Mzungu Aende Ulaya - Mwafrika Apate Uhuru" or "Let the white man go back abroad so the African can get his Freedom."However, according to newest interpretation Mau Mau means "hidden ones". Mau Mau Uprising was undertake by Kikuyus, the biggest tribe of Kenya, to whom joined their close relatives from Embu and Meru tribes.

Viewing the Wildebeest Migration

by sarahskinner

Best time to see the great migration in the Masai Mara is between Mid July - Mid/Late Sept. Be patient as the Zebra & Wildebeest often take some time to decide to cross if you get their before the crossings start. They dont always cross every day depending on how far in the Migration is so its worth visiting more than once during a trip, one day 500 can cross the next 5000!

The beauty of nature

by croisbeauty

Kenya is definetely a very beautiful country and has lots to offer to the visitors. Those who enjoy in sandy beaches will come on their own here. The best of a kind are situated around the town of Mombasa, the only problem is shallow of the water, except for the one at Malindi. In case you're enjoying in stunning landscapes, visit northern and most western parts of the country, I was in particularly captured by the most western Kenya.Finaly, the game reserves which are the main reasons why to visit Kenya. So far, I have visit two of them, missed to see Maasai Mara, Amboselli and Nakuru. Fortunatelly, I am visiting Kenya again this year in order to complete my experience about the country.

Kenya beer

by muguruki

Hot sticky day sight seeing? Spitting feathers after a daylong safari under the unrelenting African sun? Well luckily Kenyan beer does a bloody good job in quenching your thirst.Tusker is the most popular beer in the country and is an entirely quaffable beverage. My personal choice however is Pilsner, it’s a touch stronger than Tusker. There are also other brews such as Tusker Malt, Export, White Cap, Guinness, and Pilsner Ice. For those of you who are partial to an alco pop Smirnoff Ice is fairly widely available. Waking up without a hangover!

Bring Lots of Shoes

by LFChachere

A lot of people in this country do not have shoes, and they will often try to bargain and rather than ask for cash, ask if you will give them your used shoes (e.g. in exchange for some item they have for sale.)I had a pair of dirty, worn out sneakers, with holes in them and falling apart, that I had planned to throw out immediately after the trip. More than one person actually asked me for these. I would have never even thought of offering them, as they were in such horrible condition that it would seem more offensive than anything else. I would have never imagined that sneakers in such bad condition that people in the US would criticize you for wearing and not throwing out, would be so sought after in Kenya.

Kenya and Africa in General

by ChartIt

The water should always be from an UNOPENED BOTTLE. Major hotels will provide you some and replenish it every day. If you decide to buy any soda, it comes in a glass bottle. If you drink it and leave the bottle it is cheaper. They will charge you for the bottle!!! Janurary is the middle of the African Summer. It is hot, and the sun is hotter. I put on more sunscreen, nearly every hour and still was burned. I ended up wearing a light cotton shirt every day all day no matter the heat. It helped, I put on sunscreen under it. A good wide brimmed hat is important as are sunglasses.Have your camera checked, and new film. I didnt. I wish i had!!!!!!!!!! A digital camera and lots of memory chips are also good ideas. Barter! My first purchuase was for a very finely carved soapstone elephant. I got it for about ten dollars, have not regreted it. It was a large and a pound peice of stone. You...
