Due to ethnic and alchohol related feuding, there have been some murders of local villagers in the Marsabit area. While whites are usually safe, you should be aware of your surroundings at all times. Women are advised to travel in groups at night and it is also recommended during the day ( to avoid conmen and local drunks). If you need security for your trip, well-armed home guards will accompany your 4x4 for a small fee (pay 500 Ksh for a 10 mile trip).
When visting the villages, it's best to leave by night or face well-armed thieves( I saw a man with a 50 caliber anti-tank gun) who have stepped up their campaign against the villagers.

In Marsabit, the mosquitos are farely rare, but the ones that are around are potentially dangerous. I have a funny sleep habit that causes me to stick a foot out of the covers when I sleep. When I did this in my sleep one night, it pulled half of the net off of me, so I was unprotected from mosquitoes that night. Be careful! It never hurts to spray yourself as well - Buzz up is a spray that has DEET but has very little smell.
