Kibera is the largest slum area in the eastern Africa, many says it is probably the largest one in whole of Africa. According to statistics, over one million of people live there. I was lucky to have my own guide, guy named Francis, who took me all around Goma, Soweto and Kibera and I saw the worst living conditions one can imagine. There is no runing water inside the "houses", no power in most of them, no gas and of course no bathrooms. Still, most of the people I met around looks happy and enjoying in life no matter if so limited in its conditions. There is no doubt about, Kibera is the most vivid and the most pitoresque part of Nairobi. Leave a Comment

Embu people live north-west of Nairobi, in the direction of Mount Kenya. They migrated to Kenya from the Congo Basin, together with their close relatives the Kikuyu and Meru people. The Embu are predominantely farmers but they held some cattle too. A man's riches being judged by how many wives and children he had. The Embu were fierce warriors who stood firm in defence of their territory and people. They also rose against the British in the Mau Mau fight for Kenya's independence. Their huts are simple wooden construction, same goes for grannary. Man's hut is a bit smaller in size than his wives huts are. Leave a Comment

Kamba or Akamba people belong to the central Bantu tribe, migrated to their present home from Kilimanjaro. They began as hunters who kept some livestock and cultivated the land a little. Fertile soil of the Mbooni region allowed them to settle down and became agriculturally oriented. The Kamba are skilled craftsmen and make both tools and beautiful artwork. Wood craving is a highly developed Kamba skill. Kamba are one of a rare tribes using both male and female circumcision. Leave a Comment

The Great Rift Valley is a geographical valley-like feature running 5000km through the African landscape from Syria to Mozambique. It was created by the separation of the African and Arabic tectonic plates some 35 million years ago. It varies in width from 30-100 km and in depth from a few hundred to several thousand metres. The valley has no outlet to the sea, therefore its lakes tend to have as high mineral content as the salt is left behind by evaporation. The formation of the Rift Valley continues: within a few million years, eastern Africa will probably split off to form a new landmass Leave a Comment

There is aworning for the locals which says something like, "keep off the truck", but nobody respecting it here. The following picture, you can see, shows train passing by. Locals use the truck as a safe walking path in order to avoid slippery paths. Most of the time it serve as the window shop too because train pass occasionaly only. Finaly, extremely poor people use it to get to Nairobi on foots. Leave a Comment

We started our tour at Goma, part of Kibera which is situated closest to Nairobi. Goma is very well connecetd to Nairobi, by number of local bus liners and by hundreds of matatus, day and night. It is not advisable visiting Kibera after dark, even locals who do not live here avoiding it. Although sunny day, the whole area was still very muddy after the rain falling all night long. I had to walk very carefuly because the paths (locals call them streets), were slippery. Walking there was the same as walking over the ice in a normal city shoes. There is railway-truck, in the middle of Goma, which looks like being out of use. Many shop-holders use it to expose their goods right in the middle of it (see my pic) while locals walk over it because is isn't slippery like paths are. Those who cannot afford matatu or bus, follow this railway-truck to get Nairobi by foot. Anyway, the truck is still in use, train passed over when I was there. Leave a Comment

The memorial park in downtown Nairobi marks the spot where the US embassy once stood. Over 200 people died that day, in August 1998, when a bomb blast caused extensive damage and loss of life. There were simultaneous terrorist attacks on the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. The park has a monument that bears the names of all the people that lost their lives that day. The site is right by one of Nairobi's most busy areas and on hindsight, you may wonder how such a sensitive building stood here. Though of course at the time, the security threat perceptions were not the same as today... Leave a Comment

The Arboretum is a quiet tree park near the State House with lots of exotic trees shrubs within walking distance from the city centre. It’s a great place to hang out if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi for a while. During the day there are lots of people walking there, doing sports or just relaxing on the benches, so I felt quite safe. Leave a Comment

On your way to the Masai Mara Game Reserve, about an hour out of Nairobi you come to the Great Rift Valley View Point. You must stop to take some pictures of this beautiful scenery
