Lake Nakuru National Park, Nairobi
Crescent Island is situated on lake Naivasha and is actually a private game sanctuary. As mentioned earlier, you are able to do a walking safari here where you can get up close and personal with a multitude of wildlife including zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, vervet monkeys, hares, genet cats, waterbuck, giraffe and flamingo.
There are no fences in this game reserve and no predators. Having said that, it is a fantastic experience to visit one of the only places in the world where you are able to wander amongst wild animals.
The crater lake is a sunken volcano and makes for a spectacular site when walking down the rocky outcrops after a day of wildlife spotting!
Brilliant pink flamingos, as far as the eye can see, are just a taste of what is to come once you enter the Lake Nakuru National Park, approx 4 hrs drive from Nairobi. Nakuru, I was told, means "dusty place." I can not understand how this National Park got the name Nakuru as the extremely large Lake Nakuru is surrounded by very lush vegitation that is home to some of the most spectacular wildlife in all of Africa.
On our first morning in the park we packed our gear and departed at 7am for a day of adventure. After driving for less than 2 km's we spotted 2, yes 2, Leopard sitiing in a tree with a lion on the ground looking up at them. Closer inspection saw the leopard on the bottom sitting on a fresh kill, the leopard at the top wanting the kill and the lion wanting the 2 leopards and the kill! Nature at it peak!
Lake Nakuru National Park is a magnificent park for spotting a large concentration of wildlife in their natural habitat.
Leopard, spotted hyena, lion, Colobus monkey, foxes, baboons, rock hyrax, Rotschild's giraffe, both black and white rhinoceros, buffalo and much much more can all be seen here along with numerous birds, lizards and python.
This park is your best chance of spotting the elusive Leopard!
This in itself makes the 4 hour trip from Nairobi well worth the adventure!
On the way to the Masai Mara, and approx 90 minutes drive from Nairobi, you will discover Lake Naivasha. Here you will find hippo, Giraffe, buffalo, zebra, a word class bird population including fish eagles etc.
Boat trips on the lake are widely available, and is a great way to spend an afternoon or morning. This is a perfect way to explore the 13km wide lake and take in all of the animal life that the lake has to offer.
US$20 will get you a 4 hour tour of the lake.
