Nairobi National Park is not far from the citycentre. It´s amazing to drive around in the park and to see the buildings of Nairobi at the background. The night before we heard the lions, while we were lying in our tent at the Rangers campsite 3 KM from the park
You can only visit the park by car, so you have to book a tour or to hire a car. We hired a taxi for various visits in the neighbourhood of the campsite, including our visit to the park.
We went on safari into park, starting at 6.30a.m.one morning.-just 2 of us and our driver.Peter. Our driver was so knowledgable about all the wildlife we saw.We had to make a list of the birdlife, we saw so much!
We were within 10 feet of a giraffe, as soon as we entered the park!
Peter knew where to find the animals for us to see. We got quite near to rhino, buffalo, ostriches, wildebeest, hyenas,.An incredible experience.
The birds were too numerous to list, but one of the most extraordinary was the secretary bird!
The views from the highest point in the park were out of this world.
Altogether, an incredible experience.
The most unique feature of Nairobi National Park is that it is so close to the city that in some spots you can see wildlife against the backdrop of the Nairobi skyline. When I was there in September most of the animals unfortunately had not yet returned from their migration, and the park looked rather deserted, so you should inquire about this before your visit. One of the animals we did meet, however, was this impressive looking buffalo. Our taxi driver on the other hand was not impressed at all, and decided to reverse the car and do a 30 min detour instead of driving past this guy. Buffaloes are one of the most dangerous species in Africa and will charge at the drop of a hat.
The sign says it all!
My only query is, "If there's a both warthog and a child in the way, which one do you swerve to avoid"???
The amazing crested crane--of which we saw 2 pairs-very rare apparently, so extremely lucky to see them.
The orphanage is by the entrance of the park, inside the park u can find semi-tame, orphaned and wounded animals. There is also a small souvenir booth.
