Nyama chomo is the Kenyan national food. The photos are taken in a Kenyan restaurant in downtown Nairobi. The menu shows typical food like meat with Ugali, Chapati, Kienyeji or rice. The price is low here compared to western restaurants. The Kenyan people eat their food with their hands (without knife and fork).
Probably one of the best Ethiopian restaurants in Nairobi - and very reasonably priced. The food is authentic and the portions are so big that usually one plate is enough to feed two people. The restaurant is on a property with a garden. also on the premises are an ethiopian travel agency, an ethiopian boutique and an ethiopian barber, making it one of the meeting spots of the ethiopian community in Nairobi. The interior is unpretentious and if you want to dine and wine at a posh place, Habesha is not for you. If you like good, spicy food, you will enjoy it I like the dry tips and kitfo in particular. and the fresh fruit juices, especially mango!
Zen Garden is actually a location with three different places - the oriental restaurant Bamboo, a lounge/bar and a coffeehouse. So far, I have only been at bamboo which offers a selection and blend of Japanese, Thai and Chinese dishes mainly. Everything I had so far tasted very nice and is freshly prepared. Interior not overly zen, but lacks overdecoration with buddhas and dragons :) I liked the sushi/sashimi plate. Portions are rather generous. We shared a number of dishes and definitely did not leave hungry!
Anghiti is located in Westlands, a neighborhood that is predominantly Indo-Kenyan. As far as authenticity goes, the restaurant passes the neighborhood test - whenever I go there, most of the clients are Indian, so if the food meets their standards it has not been messed up for Westerners. The restaurant is set in an office building, so those who might look for a more romantic setting might be dissapointed, but the food is very good and the service friendly. There is a great selection of vegetarian dishes as well as curries and tandoories. My personal favorites are the eggplant balti and the seafood dishes
Wild game is served (legally, and without endangering the species affected) in some reserves and at the Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi—where else can you taste zebra, crocodile and wildebeest? Seriously, don't miss this popular grill-house where you can enjoy a cold beer, great varieties of local meats and, natrually, plenty of tourists. Despite the latter, it's worth the trip. Crocodile was surprisingly good.
Probably the best food I had in Nairobi. The in-hotel restaurant Zen is very, very good. The place is next to the bar at The Stanley's and you can sit there and study the menu over a Tusker before going in. The restaurant as such is not that special, but classic elegant. Mmmmm - I had lobster... a real splash-out. But the Italian food that some in our company had was excellent, too, I noticed. Some went for steak varieties and that. too , was apparently great.
The Thorn Tree is a classic; this is where Lonely Planet stole the web discussion forum name from. There is an acacia growing in the middle of the outdoor seating area and you can stick notices to it's thorns... well, that was it's old usage, nowadays there is a bulletin board. See spearate tip.The Thorn Tree Restaurant is a very popular hangout and a place to see and be seen, even if there isn't any particular style or dress code demanded. It is not a stylish place. You can enter from the Stanley's hotel lobby or walk in from the roadside.It is a nice and very comfy and social place to hang out - do coome here before you leave Nairobi for the atmosphere, if not necessarily for the food which isn't that special. Apparently very popular - it was very busy when i went with a couple of friends on a regular workday evening. Both locals and visitors are frequenting Trattoria. It seemed a good place to end a safari visit in Kenya, unless Carnivore is the thing.Located in Town House it has a side walk outside seating down at traffic level, and a limited verandah seating with a view to the Wabera Street. Indoors there are at least two floors of seating without loosing the feeling of cosyness and intimacy. Good service, good food and wine. Nothing over the top either, so it felt a comfortable place to The fish and seafood was superb, grilled calamaris were a hit among us - even the Greek was nodding in agreement.If hungry, compile a few dishes amongst each other and tuck in on ashare basis. Otherwise, the dishes are just big enough for a dinner. But there is room for appetizers, dessert - smart menu...
There are a number of Java House locations. We went to three. The first is in the ABC shopping center in Lavington. The second was around the corner from the US Embassy and the third was in the Nairobi airport, which serves alcohol. They all are great. The staff are always on top of everything and will go out of their way to accommodate changes if you want. The Java House by the American Embassy is a very family oriented atmosphere, they even have a playset for the kids. Outdoor seating is available. Everything I had was great. Turkey club, carne asada burrito, hot dog and chips, nuggets and chips, pepper quiche and salad, bbq chicken sandwhich. Like I said we ate there almost everyday we were in Nairobi and we were there 2 weeks.
