Kenyan bars: Liveliness all around
  • Tip Rating:
  • During the week some bars look almost deserted, some of them even closed but on friday night everything changes drastically. On friday, bars are overcrowded by the both, locals and tourists, who come here for dancing, meeting friendsand and enjoying in inevitable Tusker, fine and not too strong local beer. If getting hungry, after dancing on a hot african rhytms, "Nyama choma" is just a perfect choice. It is traditional local dish, hashed grilled meat a bit dry but peppered, what makes you very thirsty. However, do not exaggerating with the Tusker, even if not that strong!

Crocodile Camp: Crocodile feeding in Tsavo
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ok, in the Bush there is not much you can do, as soon as the sun goes down, it tends to get very dark. If you are lucky you have a Camp with electricity - but mostly the light is barely enough to be able to read or write something. No TV, no Radio (except you took one with you).
So what you do? Normally you gather around the Camp fire, look how it burns and exchange stories of what you saw during the day or whatever.

Crocodile Camp has the much mentioned Tourist attraction of Crocodile feeding at night.

Punctually at 9 o' clock one of the workers of the camp will come with a bucket of meat, stand at the wall that seperates the Camp from the crocodiles area - the river in front of it- and begin shouting.
That sounds like: "Cooooooome Caroolinaaaa, coooooome ..... Cooooooome Susannaaaahh ... cooooome ....... ....... coooooome Marinaaaaaam cooooooooome ...."
I don't know if actually all the Crocodiles in this river are females, but it sounded to me as if he only shouted female names....
So, now if you are lucky -and the crocodiles hungry (which must not be), one or more of the crocks will show up. Slowly trotting up the river slope and then catching or better taking the meat that is shot to them.

Whatever you happen to have with you. With 10kg Safari Luggage allowed per person I did not take any elegant clothes with me, which is also not required.
Since the crocodile Camp is located quite high and it can get cooler at night, you should have a pullover or a warm jacket with you.

BTW as a non-resident of the crocodile camp, you can come and watch this, too. As far as I have seen, you pay 2.50 Euros at the entrance for it....

Tandoori Restaurant and Bar: Local nightspot
  • Tip Rating:
  • Great local bar and restaurant. Pool table and general socialising amongst the locals and tourists.

As usual it's important to be aware of the local ladies looking to secure an evenings entertainment. Watch pockets and be assertive, this usually does the trick.

A delight to meet a variety of people and enjoy an evening relaxing.

    anywhere: before the night...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Let's face it: I did not bother too much looking for nightlife in Kenya... I was most happy with admiring an amazing sunsets: this picture is taken from the bar on the 6th floor of the royal courts hotel sipping a passion fruit juice. I went for a walk in the old town later on at night but - even if beautiful - it could not compare with that sunset beauty

hide yourself, don't make a noise
  • Tip Rating:
  • and strain your ears in your tent. Hear the sound outside.
Cry of nocturnal animals in distance, rustle of something passes along near, chorus of insects...all the kinds of such noises surrounding you ease you from the excitement of the day.
    And go to sleep peacefully...

    @ your hotel: african dances
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most seaside hotels, if not all, offer some shows of african dances in the evening. They are obviously made only for tourists - but they can be pleasant and they also provide local people with a sort of income...so I guess why not. Some costumes are quite colourful, and the drums sound is excellent. There are also a couple of discos in Malindi (someone once recommended the Stardust) and a casino - but I must admit that I could not be bothered

    it depends on your hotel

Shakatak: Dance the night through till dawn
  • Tip Rating:
  • Great fun, great music, well organised nightclub. Diani Beach, just outside of the Sea Lodge and frequented by locals and tourists alike. There is a restaurant at ground level and a nightclub downstairs.

    Various: Nocturnal Game viewing
  • Tip Rating:
  • Many lodges put out food for the nocturnal species, such as this civet, and one even placed a lamb in a tree for the leopard.

Other lodges have flood lit water holes where game come during the night to drink. The lodges will wake you on request, you just have to specify which animals you want to be woken for.

Also available is a night drive. We went on a drive with a driver, armed ranger and a spotter. We saw many nocturnal animals, including the curious spring hare, which looks like a kangaroo when it jumps. Although not as spectacular as a day-time drive, I personally feel that a night drive is worth it for a different perspective on a safari.

Dress warm as it can be surprisingly cold at night!

    Nightlife can be considered...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nightlife can be considered non-existent, unless you have very good local friends. We went to a very popular club that is supposed to be the best in Mombasa - imagine a school disco in a big building plus a 'beauty contest' among undernourished schoolgirls as an extra. Very disappointing.

Sun N Sand: Based in the Hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most of the night life is based around the hotels, a few people we spoke with got taxis in to the near by village, but to tell you the truth were a bit unsure about going out late at night.

The hotel put entertainment on every evening, things like karaoke, affrican dancers and acrobates. The hotel have its own animation team which get people involved.

Dressed-up / Casual, how ever you feel but no shots or bikinis. 3/4 are acceptable.
