Masai Warriors

by joolssss

We went to vist a masai village while on safari. We were shown th fence that is made to keep the lions out and in the fence are gates, one per family so you can always tell how many families live in each village. When you enter the village the women will sing you a welcome song. The leader showed us around a house that was being built and one that had been built. They are made of mud and cow dung and are only built by women. They are incrediby basic but fascinating. The young single men dres in red and sing their song and then jump for you, the highest jumpers get the best women, and once they are married they cannot jump anymore. They can also take as many wives as they please. Their diet is of meat, a little maize, blood and milk. So much more to say but will leave it to you to go see and find out well worth a trip

Finding the children.

by grandad

Wherever you go in the surrounding villages you will find children who are very pleased to accept any sweets that you have to offer.Be careful to supervise them properly or you will have a riot on your hands! Please do not throw sweets from passing vehicles, the resulting scrabble is demeaning and offensive to adult Kenyans.

Going on Safari

by robslacker

When you are there everyone does this, but some trips better than others. The one I went on was for a week visiting 4 Parks and camping out in them, with travel by an ex army 4 tonne truck. Much more interesting then the highly tacky and commercialised safaris most people go on. Got to see a lot more animals as it was slow paced and got to feel closer to them without having glass in the way as the truck was open. You also got to travel fairly extensively around the country and see a bit more than the average tourist. Booked it in Nairobi but can't remember the company sorry. Look aroiund and you get a better experience rather than just going with the standard package option where you are herded around like cattle.

Lake Navaisha

by Tallchick80

Lake Navaisha is a freshwater lake about 2 hours to the west of Nairobi. Located in the rift valley, it's just a short way from Mt. Longonot (an active volcano) We went to the Lake Navaisha country club, where we paid a fee of 100 Ksh (1-2 USD) for entry. The grounds of the country club are lush, and there are monkeys and animals roaming about. Rooms are available. From the country club, you can arrange to take a boat safari around the lake. The boat costs quite a bit (approx. 3000 per boat) for a two hour trip around the lake. If you are lucky, you will not be disappointed. Part of the lake adjoins an animal sanctuary, so you can see wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, elephants, lions, and loads more animals that come to the water to drink. The animals are abundant. Also, if you get lucky, you'll see hippos. We came across a herd of roughly 20-30 hippos in the water! It was amazing.Bird...

Funzi Island

by Tallchick80

Funzi is a mangrove island, located about 30 km from Diani Beach. You can arrange private boat tours of the mangrove swamp canals near the island that boast crocodiles and bird watching. Your chances are 50/50 at seeing any animals, which is important to remember.Once your tour of the canals is finished you are taken out into the ocean and brought to a private sandbar where the water is crystal clear and you can go swimming or just lay in the sun. There are no corals in this area, so leave your snorkeling equipment at your hotel. If possible, you can arrange to go out further to sea in your boat and are offered the chance to see dolphins. They have been seen in the area and occasionally come around. Also, if you can, you can arrange with your boatman to take you to the eastern side of Funzi where there is a decent coral reef system. However, BE CAUTIOUS, there is a strong current and I...

"QUEEN", JUST FOR STARTERS!

by safardreams

In the MASAI-MARA, KENYA! Sometimesyou need to drive off the path. Give the LIONS some room. There will be other buggers around more times than not! I felt I was a bit lucky in 2002. Most things we had all alone! The LIONESS(9/2002) giving her man a hard time!THE LIONESS (10/2001) keeping a sharp eye on us!! The BLACK N WHITE (9/2001) just washing away! The TEETH!!Just a YAWN! There were a couple of females here.A male in the bushes! Some cubs doing the "play" thing! (9/2002).The lady that does all the work. But the MALE has the most important job. Defend and Die if need be!

LOCAL CULTURE

by mickeyjane1

AS MENTIONED BEFORE I BECAME VERY GOOD FRIENDS WITH ONE GUY WHO WORKED AT THE HOTEL, WHO KINDLY TOOK ME OFF THE TOURIST AREA AND INTO ONE OF THE LOCAL VILLAGES,THIS WAS HOW I REMEMBER KENYA THE MOST..FOR ME THIS IS TRAVELLING AT ITS BEST..GETTING TO SEE THE LOCAL PEOPLE.WE GOT A LOCAL BUS, IN DIANI AND TRAVELLED JUST ABOUT 15 MINUTES..VERY CROUDED BUS, BUT ACTUALLY FELT VERY SAFE.WHEN WE GOT OFF I WENT WITH HIM UP A DIRT TRACK, ONE LOCAL CHILD CAME UP AS SOON AS HE SAW TOURIST...I WENT TO REACH INTO MY BAG TO GET MY PURSE... MY FRIEND SHOUTED "NO DONT" BUT IT WAS TOO LATE I WAS SURROUNDED BY LOTS OF CHILDREN THEY CAME FROM NOWHERE...I GAVE THEM SOME CHANGE, BUT I DIDNT HAVE A LOT WITH ME, SO FELT GUILTY THEY COULDNT ALL HAVE SOME.THEN WE WENT TO A MARKET, I WAS EXTREMELY HOT, (BEARING IN MIND I AM PREGNANT AS WELL AS NOT BEING USED TO HEAT LIKE THIS) AND WE DECIDED TO REST AT A CAFE IN...

Marketplaces

by wildorchid416

There were two great marketplaces that we visited in Kenya that are generally off the beaten path because your average safari package may not stop in either of these towns. The first is closer to Amboseli, a border crossing on the Kenya/Tanzania line, the town of Oloitokitok. It's fairly small, but the Saturday market is bustling with activity. There is a whole section of produce (just be careful what you buy and wash it, obviously) and then there's stall after stall of everything from second hand clothes to fabrics, dry goods, woven bags, musical instruments. There are a few shops nearby, including tailors that can custom make clothing for literally, a couple of dollars. There are a few colorful local bars too, great places to grab a bottle of (usually) warm beer. Another great stop is north of Nairobi, Machakos, which is much larger than Oloitokitok. The marketplace is extensive, and I...
