hidden beauty

by eralc

I was in two minds about whether to share this with anyone or not. The place is called tartar falls. You have to go to kapengueria and ask a local to take you. The walk took us about half a day. It ends at the top of the falls at the apparent highest point of the rift valley. You can see for miles...all the way to the mountains dividing kenya from uganda. It took my breath away. I've never expirenced anything quite like it. We sat for hours at the top of the falls that go down for hundreds of feet. I didn't want to leave there at all.

Amazing Rift Valley Scenery...

by TracyG

Lake Bogoria which is north of Lake Nakuru. People seem to get as far as Nakuru and then stop. This is one of the best places to see flamingo and just relax. There are also steam geysers and some hot springs. It is very worth the effort getting there, and also offers some great rift valley scenery.

'Africa' rockpool

by smcparland

At the end of Tiwi Beach is a rockpool called Africa rockpool which is supposed to be good for snorkelling. We were told it was unsafe to walk along the beach beyond our hotel due to machete robberies from local villagers, so we were advised to take a beach boy along with us as a 'guide' and pay him £2/ 3. We did not have time to do this trip - so if you go please let me know if it was worth the effort.

The Blue Market

by SirRichard

In Nairobi, do your shopping at the 'Blue Market'. It's a big explanade of huts in the open air, just in front of the highly touristic 'Covered Market'. If you dare to go into the labyrinth of tiny streets (do it, it's safe enough) you can bargain for any kind of souvenir.

Sweetwaters Game Reserve

by Krumel

Sweetwaters Game Reserve is situated on the Laikipia Plateau at the foot of Mt. Kenya near Nanyuki and has an abundance of wildlife within a relatively small area, including all of the Big Five (rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard). As Sweetwaters is a rhino reserve it is home to more than 30 black rhinos. For more info see my Nanyuki page. For accommodation you can either stay at Sweetwaters Tented Camp, right next to a floodlit waterhole, or, if you have LOADS of money you can stay in a villa that used to belong to Kashoggi (the weapon dealer who used to be the richest man in the world), but which he lost in a gamble. It has two outdoor swimming pools, its own private floodlit waterhole, a tennis court, and the most enormous bed in the master bedroom.

Taita Hills

by Krumel

If you want to get away from the tourist masses and the minibuses the Taita/Rukinga Wildlife Conservancy between the Tsavo East and West National Parks might be the place for you. The privately owned ranch comprises the Taita Discovery Centre (TDC) which can accommodate up to 40 people, mainly students and scientist doing research in this area, and Galla Tented Camp with its six twin tents. This means that unlike in the big parks where a whole convoy of cars will congregate around one animal, you will have whatever wildlife you come across all for yourself. They also offer safaris on foot whereas in the National Parks you are only allowed to get out of your minibus in designated areas. On the other hand the downside is that the animal density is not as high as in the National Parks, and the animals are not that much habituated to humans and therefore a lot harder to spot than in the big...
