it's directly under the equator but...

by stonefree

Carry along with a long sleeve shirt or a thin sweater.Although Kenya is directly under the equator, it is in the altitude of about 3500m and the air is dry, you won't feel too hot in the daytime and it is quite cool in the nightime there. A bandanna and sunglasses will be helpful. When driving through savanna, you'll get smeared with a cloud of dust.

Try not to take too large a suitcase. The tour that we took was organised in small vans and there was not a lot of storage space. This type of tour does not call for dress cloths! Shorts, tee shirts and jeans are acceptable. Remember to take a hat and sun glasses. Wear sensible low shoes. Most of the time, we were in the vans or at the lodge but one time, it had been raining and van got stuck. We had to get out and push!!. The water is not brilliant but safe to drink while in the lodges. Would suggest taking diarrhoea tablets with you, just in case.Even though you are in the van a lot of the time, you can still get sunburn through the windows, so take a good factor sunblock. Most lodges have a shop that can supply extras for photography. For this type of tour, I must recommend that you have a good quanlity camara with a telephoto lense. The guides do their best to get as close as...

Don't forget the Mosquito Spray

by CCWalkabout

Lightweight clothes generally. Although it can be quite cold in the mountains so you may need a sweater or fleece. Mosquito spray. The little blighters carry quite a punch and you need anti malarials too. Take loads of film, batteries, etc. They are available out there, but probably not your favourite brand. Take a monopod or bean bag to hold you camera stead when on safari. The vans wobble alot, so be careful.

The constant gardener

by Rrroel

I find no category for books, so I put it here. "The constant gardener" from John Le Carré is a good book about a British diplomat in Nairobi and his girlfriend, an NGO-activist acting about medicines for AIDS-patients. It plays mainly in Nairobi and the Turkana region. I recommend it to all people who are there, have been there or just like a good book from time to time.

Take some strong shoes that you are not afraid of wrecking and that you can wear in sea water; you will have to walk to the dhow, and there are sea urchins everywhere. Bring little presents - like pens, T-shirts and the like. You may be able to exchange them for souvenirs and they will end up cheaper than buying them. Also, bring some clothes you no longer wear - you may be able to use them, too.

backpack...don't pack valuables in it. they sometimes check the bags on arrival into nairobi and things can go 'missing'. depends on what you're doing and where you're going....the coast gets really hot, and if you're climbing mt. kenya that get's really cold. weather can sometimes be unpredictable so be prepared! mosquito repellant, anti-malarials, and water bottle! sometimes buying film and batteries can be expensive so it is a good idea to stock up on these before the trip. if you're diving most dive centres rent out equipment, at a very affordable rate, so if you're not fussy then there is no need to bring all your gear down with you.

With yr Immodium and Lariam tablets, you are safe.

by Cacharel

Baggy bag and a little personal hand bag ... Adventure clothing, bermuda, t shirt, long sleeves shirt..camel type shoes. ...ercefuryl and immodium tablets, insect repellent, toilet paper... I had a camcorder. In tented camps you can charge yr battery. Do not forget yr swimsuit...ladies, nude breast on beaches are apparently not appropriate... Do not change money in hotels, currency rate is prohibitive...deal with beach boys, you always will have better rate for small amount of money.

Water temperature: 78 degrees. A 10-minute sail by dhow, and you're in the Dodori National Reserve on the mainland. Make no mistake March is a warm month, with temperatures usually in the mid eighties and no breeze, but the stillness enhances the Indian Ocean's clarity, for picture-perfect snorkeling. By mid-April, the monsoon hits with a vengeance, closing everything down till July.

Backpacks work great for moving around. Take something small if you can. Buy a hard case on your way out of Nairobi for those special trinkets. Or...have them packed in a box at the market. Wear what you like, but be sure to bring raingear, and a polar fleece. Depending on the time of year, the nights and mornings can be slightly nippy. Tampons and sunscreen are expensive. Bring your own. You can get most things in Nairobi, Mombasa and bigger centers. Not so much in rural areas. The settings on the camera should be altered for you to get the best shots of the Masai and other tribes... Believe it or not, darker skin calls for different camera settings. Don't bring your camera out in Nairobi...you'll risk losing it to Nairobbery. Beach gear/shorts only on the coast or in camping type settings. Bring plastic bags.... if you're on dusty roads, you may want to put your clothes inside...

We took too many bags. Take one suitcase and one carry on. Roll the clothes rather than folding them.We were told we might need some nice clothes for one of the hotels, because they were all fancy hotels. However, we didn't really need anything fancy. Just some clean nice casual clothes. Don't assume that Africa is a hot place. We took too many shorts and too few long pants and sweaters. We were there in June, when the sun is not as high as it is in spring and fall. This is a peculiarity due to being on the equator. Look up temperatures on the internet and then trust them. Take a variety of clothing. You may need to change into cooler clothes midday on some days. Anti malaria medication is a must. You will need medication stomach upset and possibly diarhea. Take wet ones and toilet paper. There are places where there is no toilet paper.Travel iron, hair dryer, voltage adaptor--every...
