Packing List

Most tour operators (the good ones) will provide you with a piece of luggage that you use. The reason for that is there is a 45lb. limit on many inner country flights.I managed to cram everything I needed into the one bag for a 2 week trip. Lodges, and hotels can clean items for you at reasonable rates. I brought hiking boots with me, yet didn't really need them. Dress was very casual with the exception of the Mt. Kenya Safari Club, where it is slightly more dressy. The items that I was the most happy I had packed? 1. 10 rolls of film (it wasn't enough!)2. Handi wipes.3. Travel size tissues.4. Insect repellent. Please don't ask me to list them in order of importance! They were all CRITICAL to my survival! 1. Camera2. Batteries3. Flash4. Film (at least 15 rolls) it is very expensive to buy there!5. Lense wipes (it is extreemly dusty on the game drives)6. A 500 zoom lense. Although, it...

If you go on a safari, try to pack light because there is not much space in the minivans or in the jeeps. Contact your local health centre at least 6/8 weeks before your departure to see if the vaccinations you have are sufficient. You will have to take anti-malaria drugs, most preferably Lariam. Start to take these pills 2 weeks before you leave. Side effects of Lariam may be very serious (hallucinations, fear, ...). If you face such kind of problems, ask for a combination of Paludrine/Nivaquine which has no side effects and is only a little less effective. It is obvious that you also take some medicines against diarrhoea. Also take your own syringes, just in case. *Take LOTS and LOTS of film with you, count at least 2 rolls per safari day. *Take more than one camera as well, preferably an automatic one for the snapshots! Animals can be very fast and they may have gone already before...

I would advise just for peace of mind a few laytex gloves and a few hyperdermic needles - just oncase you need any treatment. The AIDS victims in Mombasa are a cruel reminder of the epidemic in Africa and I'm not saying that their equipment is dirty but peace of mind is in my mind very important. This is my best tip and will make you feel as if you have made a difference. Ask a taxi driver to take you to the nearest school (the amazing thing is that the noise of children laughing/playing at break is exactly the same the world over). When packing take a box of biros - yes just ordinary biro, ball point pens! Hand these to pupils, they will then be able to attend school for another few months - you cannot attend school without a pen! Do NOT give them to the teachers - they will sell them to the already poor pupils parents. The children will make you feel like a God. The one that I went...

Rucksack. Don't take expensive luggage which shouts out that you've got money! MOSQUITO REPELLANT. MOSQUITO REPELLANT and anti-malaria tablets. Don't flash your camera around unless it's one of those plastic throw away types. Have I mentioned....take MOSQUITO REPELLANT!!!

The climate is kind but things can get muddy during the raining season. Also, at higher altitudes the temperatures can drop during the nights, so always have a sweater handy. Long sleeves and pants will help keep the mosquitoes away. Medical: check with your physician for anti-malaria profylaxe and if you need any shots. Toiletries: the usual, but don't forget the sun lotion and anti-mosquito lotions (with DEET). Bring plenty, and then some! When going on a safari, be advised you will take more pictures than you had originally planned. Buying film in the National Parks is possible, but expensive. Bring a lot! When staying in lodges, usually recharging batteries isn't a problem, but make sure your equipment can handle the voltage (220-230V). And bring a converter plug. Strange as it sounds, pens (ball points) are a much wanted item in Kenya. They can be used in bartering processes...

Don't forget a waterproof jacket!

by TracyG

Rucksack or holdall. If you plan to travel more independantly then a rucksack is probably better. A waterproof jacket is invaluable, as are a set of good clothes and shoes for nights on the town. Insect repellant and anti-malarials are a MUST, as well as a basic first aid kit. If you plan to trek far off the beaten path then an emergency kit - containing syringes, needles etc. may be something to consider. In the larger cities there is no problem at all getting film, and it is pretty well priced as well, but always take more film than you think you will need wherever you are. It is always a good idea to take a mosquito net, particulalry if you are planning on sleeping outdoors. A water bottle is essential, particularly if doing any longer hikes, if not then a bought bottle of water will do the trick.

Torch / flashlightPower supply is so bad in Kenya that after packing money and passport the torch / flashlight is the next thing in the bag.

Gifts for local children- Kenya

by carmeninmadrid

All the children asked us for pens on the local stops. We had bought gum to give away, but would have rather given them pens, pencils or colored ballons which they asked for.

Mosquito Head Net

A mosquito head net is invaluable at sunset and weighs nothing.
