Chez les animaux: Eating in the wild

by filipdebont

As we were travelling with a big overland truck, and mostly we were camping on remote campgrounds with only basic facilities, we had to prepare our own food. The Kenyan company Gametrackers had provided a cook. But we needed to give him some assistance.Anyway it was not a good cook at all, breakfast was poor, and mostly we got black toast or dry bread. Also there was not much variety in the things he prepared, or maybe he used the same herbs every day and on every dish, like this every day the food tasted the same.Result after 3 weeks I had lost 7 kg. (Wasn’t that a great diet . . . ) No favourite dish

Hard Rock Cafe Maralal: Maralal, popular meeting point

by co48

The Hard Rock Cafe opposite the Shell station is the most popular place in town. It's one of the best places to eat and you can meet here locals and travellers. The local dishes are good and cheap. The staff was very friendly. You can sit inside and outside at the veranda. The fresh mango juice (30 shilling) was delicious and much cheaper than the softdrinks.

The Carnivore: Not one for the veggies...

by TracyG

I'm sure that this is nearly everyones favourite restaurant in Nairobi, just for the sheer madness of the place and the amount of meat on offer. You get to try so many different types of meat from the antelopes to zebra! MEAT..... but particularly the crocodile tail. Though they do rotate the types of meat quite regularly.

Carnivore: "I SURRENDER"

by Tallchick80

Carnivore is a fitting name for this restaurant, you won't leave hungry. The specialty here is nyama choma ("barbequed meat" in Swahili) and if you are a vegetarian, I don't recommend going here. The meat is brought around on large spits, and can range from everything to beef to crocodile. There is a wide variety and you can eat as much as you want. In the middle of the table, you'll find a multi-level contraption holding almost every sauce known to man. Atop of this is a flag, that summons the waiters to bring you more and more meat. You take the flag down when you "surrender" to the meat and can take no more. The food was great and well prepared, and also don't forget to order a DAWA ("medicine" in Swahili) it's a drink that contains vodka or rum, with honey, limes, and lots of ice. My favorite dish were the spare ribs (served with a sweet honey BBQ sauce) and the crocodile. Crocodile...

ALI BARBOURS CAVE RESTAURANT: EAT IN THE NATURALLY FORMED CORAL CAVES

by mickeyjane1

VERY UNUSUAL SETTING...AS MENTIONED YOU ARE SEATING IN A CAVE, THE CAVE ROOF OPENS SO IT IS VERY BEAUTIFUL.VERY FRIENDLY STAFF, ALSO THERE IS A BUS WHICH WILL PICK CLIENTS UP ANYWHERE ON DIANI BEACH.

The Carnavore: Meat, meat and more meat

by uglyscot

Tourist-oriented restaurant. African decor.you sit at tables and waiters pass by with skewers of meat. Various dips and sauces are on the table. If you fancy the particular meat offered, the waiter slices off generous portions. Enjoy, until the next waiter comes with another type of meat.Types: beef, chicken, pork, lamb, ostrich, deer, sausages and wild game depending on what is available. Ostrich because it is tasty and healthy.

Little Governor's Tented Camp: Lunch with Friends

by snoopycat

Lunch at Governor's Camp was a daily delight...... Great food, terrific staff, a nice pinot grigio, and sometimes good company. Warthog (just kidding). The wonderful staff was aware that I am a vegetarian, and they made sure that the lunch buffet was stocked with plenty of delicious meatless options.

Governor's Camp Bush Dinner: An Unforgettable Meal

by snoopycat

While staying at Little Governor's Tented Camp, I was treated to a Bush Dinner on my birthday.Imagine hearing lions, elephants and hippos all around you while dining under the night sky in a five-star atmosphere with ten-star service. There must have been 100 staff people involved in making the evening happen. The biggest surprise party I ever had. What a night! It will remain to be the most memorable meal (and birthday) of my life. If you get an opportunity to have a Bush Dinner, do not pass it up!! The good people at Little Governor's made a birthday cake that even had my name on it......Imagine my surprise!!This is in a place that is miles away from the nearest electricity. I still can't figure out how they managed to turn out that wonderful meal without it.

The Meditteraneo: Italian/pizza

by Suet

In Westlands, relatively safe area, but DO watch out for groups of trouble..... when getting out of the car, park in front, avoid the street/parking boys and pay the uniformed guard about 20Ksh to look after the car, pay him an additional 20 when you leave.Food very tasty, good quality, nice atmoshpere, pizzas excellent, rice dishes even better, good house wine, or buy a bottle of Gato Negro red wine, drink only the bottled water.....Safe, courteous, and they ALWAYS find you a table, even if you haven't booked. tagliatelle carbonara, prawn gambiettaJust freshly cooked, extremely tasty......

Haandis and Anghitis: Indian/Asian food

by Suet

Under the misguided impression that I cooked decent Indian food, I was knocked over by the quality and taste of these two restaurants. What a delight! Haandis is the heavier "cooked in ghee" style of curry and accompaniments, Anghitis is lighter cooking, but no less tasty. Washed down with a cool Tusker beer, we ate royally and as often as possible....... Rogan Josh, palak paneer, chicken tikka, chicken jeera, prawn masala....... oh, the spices are fresh, divine and the whole experience is wonderful.
