Tamarind restaurant: in Mombasa

by call_me_rhia

The tamarind is the best restaurant in Mombasa and it's particularly well-known for its seafood dishes. Many people had marvelled about it that we decided to go there for our final lunch... everything was perfect. the luxurious building in Moorish style, the food, the view over the sea and the old town... thrilling! We've had the msot perfect lobster we've ever had: huge, delicious... and served with a light cognac sauce that I'll never forget. We had some veggies and rice cooked in coconut milk as a side-dish.

Shasha camp: Voi, near Tsavo East

by call_me_rhia

Shasha camp is a camp + open-air restaurant just few minutes away from one of the entrance gates to Tsavo East NP (the Voi gate I think). it's beautifully set into the African landscape and surrounded by towering acacia trees and a tropical garden on the banks of Voi river. Don't be fooled by the animal "skins" you'll see hanging on the reception desk: they are painted fabrics. Shasha camp is a good option for lunch when in Tsavo: because it's located outside the park it's cheaper than park's lodges and restaurant: the food was simple but good - and thew had two musicians playing african music while we were eating

the Old Man and the Sea: in Malindi

by call_me_rhia

A gem of a restaurant! This little place is wonderful: it's located in a small house in moorish style and in the distance you can see the vasco da gama monument/pillar. It's also a very intimate and romantic place. We had some smoked sail fish as a starter and it was really tasty - but the highlight came from the lobster: perfectly grilled and delicious. As a dessert there was a trio of tropical fruits sorbets - a bit risky, given the fact that we couldn't be sure that the water had been purified - but we could not resist: our tastebuds and stomach rejoiced - nothing nsty happened.

carnavor: meat eaters delight

by aussiebob

this is a well known all you can eat meat eaters resetarant.with wild game meat a specialty.the ambience is that of a large lodge with long wooden tables. the meats and accompanying sauces were varied and very well cooked and presented.my favorite meat was wildabeast.my least favorite was crocadile.........tasted like gristle and very salty. couldnt eat it at all.

Carnivore, Nairobi: Carnivore

by kcochran111

Antilope, zebra, crocodile tail? They're all on the menu at Carnivore, Nairobi's premier BBQ. This restaurant is reserved for big appetites and big competitors. Can you keep your flag standing after round 1? Zebra was pretty gamey, but the antelope was wonderful. The tamer beef and chicken varieties were tasty, but I'd avoid the croc tail.

The Lantern: The best food in west pokot

by eralc

The Lantern serves african and western dishes. It has the best chicken Kievs in the world! We ate at the lantern once a week during our stay in Kitale. The staff are so kind and really go out of their way to help you in any way they can. The salad is the only fresh veg we ate while in kenya and we never got sick, so it must be fine!! The food is lovley and the bar is very reasonably priced. Look out for Wycliff...he was our favourite waiter!....Oh, and don't be put off by the look from the out side...you have to go in the door and up the stairs, it's beautiful then...just a shame about how it looks from the outside! Either the garlic mushrooms as a starter or the Chicken Kievs. And if you order chips, ask for pink sause...it's so nice!! If you order the icecream surprise for desert for desert, i'm sure you'll be as surpriseed as we were to find that the surprise is a slice of tomatoe on...

Kenyan cuisine is surprisingly...

by shivan

Kenyan cuisine is surprisingly delicious and light, zebra kebabs are great!Don't be sad to eat a zebra, a couple of days in the savannah and you'll understand that zebras are not in danger of extinction. This is my village's pool and restaurant. Every lunch and dinner they call us to the restaurants using big drums. Funny, but after two weeks there it started being boring...

Bar in zebra colours: Stop for a drink

by sachara

On the road are many bars for a stop to have a softdrink or water. You have really to drink a lot in this climate. This one in zebra colours on our way from Tsavo to Amboseli National Park we liked very much.

Oyugis cafetaria: Lunch and drinks on the road

by sachara

Everyhwere on the road are bars, cafetaria's for a drink or lunch. It's a lot of fun to make these stops in the little towns and villages. In the south west of Kenya near Kisumu we made a stop at the Oyugis Cafetaria. The kids were very curious and liked to speak with us.

Carnivore's: Not suited for vegetarians.

by LizSitka

This is a cliche tourist thing to do, but trying the various game at Carnivore's is actually pretty interesting. After lubricating your thirst with a few Dawa (vodka gimlet with honey, essentially) you'll be presented with zebra, eland, gazelle, crocodile, waterbuck, beef, pork and lots of other stuff I don't remember. I must admit to being pleasantly surprised by zebra steaks, having a typical American aversion to eating horse or donkey meat. It was all very good but for a week afterwards I sought out meals of fruits and vegetables.
