try everyhting

I'll note not about a specific restaurant or food but about what I had there was like. They serve you quite good dishes not only in the hotel in Nairobi but also in a lodge or a camp site. The taste suites to western people but I don't know where the strange meats and the strange vegetables cooked there come from. Crocodile, ostrich, zebra...etc I love all the african dishes. Since this trip, I have become acquainted with an african restaurant in Tokyo for over 10 years.

The Carnivore: Eating vegetarian in a meat restaurant

by duke0123

Although I am vegetarian I recommend The Carnivore in Nairobi as a place to eat. Why The Carnivore? Because there is a large choise of vegetarian menu's (13 when I was there). Besides the good vegetarian dishes the cocktails they serve are great.By the way I can't understand why people eat the animals they just liked during the safari's.

La Salumeria: Great Italian in Nairobi

by Docu2001

La Salumeria is a restaurant for food-savy European ex-pats, situated in the Dhanjay Apartments in the Lavington District of Nairobi. I was becoming incresingly disappointed with the restaurants in Nairobi when an acquaintance suggested a restaurant near his home. This space is intimate without being crowded. The menu includes a number of choices in meat, pasta and fish. The wine list is affordable and the owner is helpful and welcoming. I relied on his suggestions for my meal and I was well pleased. The bresaola is made in his kitchen and was as good as any I have eaten. The ravioli with mushroom and cheese was superb and the penne with tomatoes and peppers was also well prepared. This place is an oasis in the otherwise unpredictable terrrain of Nairobi restaurants. Try the prepared meats and sausages - they are made in house and are delicious. The meat or vegetable filled ravioli's...

if you're into indian food,...

by skyediver

if you're into indian food, you won't be able to get enough here...try the 'open house' restaurant in westlands, decent prices and fab food....i'd have to say that's my favourite! and for great atmosphere, try 'rangers' (i think?!) at the nairobi national park, especially good for dinner and drinks to get you in the mood for carnivore (see clubs)!!just great food!!! ok, and the friendly staff and the fact that it's really good value for money. paneer tikka masala - oven baked indian cheese (paneer) marinated in tikka masala sauce......

Ali Barbour's Cave restaurant: Ali Barbour's Cave restaurant

by AnneKLM

What is unique about this place is that it is located inside a natural cave, that opens to the sky. The entire cave is filled with candles and candelaberers, creating a very special atmosphere. You can watch the stars while enjoying your meal. It could probably be classified as a tourist trap as well, but serves good food and good service, so let's not care about that ;-) Anything seafood, especially the lobster!

Mara River: Crocodile or antilope ?

by Cacharel

You can see on the picture a crocodile eating an small antilope who crossed the Mara River in the Masai Mara...unique experience to see :) ...i sincerely wd have preferred to taste the antilope steak on a barbecue...If you rest on the white beaches of Diani beach, ask the beach boys for a 1 kg Langouste (Lobster). They will cooked it for you on the beach with ananas and bananas...a delice at half price than hotel..

Trattoria. Carnivore....

by Cloudwlkr

Trattoria. Carnivore. KlubHouse. Keep away from Wimpy's. The burgers don't even come close to being wimpy. They suck wind (create it too!). Head to Tratorria for some great pizza. The tomato sauce doesn't compare to North America, but....when you've been traveling for months and eating ugali, roast goat (nyama choma), spinach and irio, you won't be complaining. The Carnivore is a staple with ex-pats and volunteers. For a change of pace, try the KlubHouse. It looks like a tree-house, but it's in the middle of the 'Asian' side of Nairobi. Good roast goat...and cold beer!

I don't have any particular restaurants to recommend. Many people in Nairobi go to the Carnivore to eat a variety of game meats. We had something like that at the Safari Park Hotel. They had a good show and a variety of meats, such as Zebra, gazelle, and so on. I would never eat Zebra. It just doesn't seem right somehow. But the gazelle was surprisingly good, and the ostrich was okay. I didn't get a chance to sample the crocodile, but my wife liked it and said it was like juicy chicken. I loved the Arabica coffee. They grow it in the region. It is strong, and it is good.

Ali Ba Bas Cave: Ali Ba Bas Cave

by Morphnetneo

This restaurant is inside a cave with sliding roof, you really need to see it to believe it. The price came to about £30 per couple including drinks which was quite good and the services was fantastic. The restaurant is owned by and Englishman. Duck Crepes
