Elsamere
  • Tip Rating:
  • Home of the famous author Joy Adamson who wrote the book 'Born Free' that later became a movie, Elsamere is a haven for lovers of nature, set in Acacia forest on the banks of Lake Naivasha, in Kenya's Rift Valley.

Not only that but it also does one of the best afternoon teas in Africa. After checking out the sites around the property, and the museum and paintings and show about Joy and her husband Georges life, there is an amazing array of cakes, cookies, scones and all sorts of treats that can be enjoyed. If you can imagine how delectable sounds, well imagine you have been in Africa and havent seen the sight of a cake for a few weeks and then you can imagine just how much everyone on my tours eyes lit up!!!

Now a conservation centre, the house is open from 3 till 6pm daily and costs 350 Kenyan shillings.

    Marabou Stork
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wandering quite fearlessly around the lodeg grounds, the storks really set the scene. In Norway, where I grew up, one of the main chocholate producers is called Marabou, with the stork as their logo. I was so excited about seeing them in real life, and amazing at just how big they are.

Marabou storks stand up to 1.5m tall and have a bald head and long spindly legs. They have a reputation for being somewhat unsavoury, with their fondness for carrion and their habit of squirting excrement onto their own legs. It is one of the largest flying birds in the world, with a wingspan of nearly three metres

    Hippo
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the distance we could see hippos wallowing in the lake. We wanted to get a little nearer in order to take photographs, but the boat driver was very apprehensive. Hippos can be very hostile animals and are easily agitated. A discontent hippo could turn a boat over without so much as trying. Hippos have the reputation for killing more people in Africa than any other animals. Respect!

On our boat trip we stopped at Crescent Island, where we were able to take a walking safari. There are no large predators here, so the game is fairly relaxed about humans.

    Fishing in Lake Naivasha
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is possible to go fishing in the lake. Originally there was only carp in the lake. But introduced species toke over. In 1970 the crayfish was brought from Louisiana,USA. The 300 individuals did well and now 50 ton of crayfish is harvested every year.
Also introduced were: the black tilapia, the red-eyed tilapia, and the black bass.
Commercial fishing and poaching however did the number of fish decline.

Another serious threat to the lake is the invasion of alien plant species like the water fern (Salvinia molesta) and the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). The plants cover the water not allowing light and oxygen to get in.

    Pelicans
  • Tip Rating:
  • The surface of the water had been turned white by large flocks of pelicans. I have never before or since, seen so many pelicans in one place.

While out in the boat we disturbed some of them, and seeing hundreds of these large birds take off at the same time is an amazing experience.

    Boat trip on the lake
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the Must Do activities are boat trips on the lake. The lake shore is home to giraffe and buffalo, and the water turns pink with flamingoes and white with pelicans. Grumpy hippos wallow in the shallows.

Expect to see lots of Hippo here and expect to hear even more! I regularly saw hippo basking in the waters of Lake Naivasha, they are such cool animals and so huge that I never thought they would be so big!

When you take a boat out onto the lake you will see even more.

Lying in our tent at night, only a stones throw away from the lake I would fall asleep listening to grunts on the hippo.

Giraffes walked elegantly amongst the zebra at Crater Lake Game Sanctuary. I love th Giraffe - they are very intelligent animals, are so elegant and a little nervous too.
The colours and patterns of the giraffe amongst the zebra was pretty cool !
