Picnic breakfast by grets We had the choice of two different types of safaris this morning: 1. Leaving at 06.30 and returning at 09.00 to the camp for breakfast 2. Leaving at 06.30, taking a picnic breakfast and returning to the camp at 11.00. We chose the latter, and didn't actually get back to the camp until about 12.45. About 09.10 we stopped just outside the reserve by Talek Gate to eat our picnic breakfast at a small picnic area provideed by a souvenir shop. There were chairs and a table as well as some welcome shade. The camp provided us with a tablecloth, picnic boxes as well as hot water for tea and coffee.
I'm not greatly fond of picnic breakfasts, and this one was no exception. There was a boiled agg, a sausage and a slice of bacon, two slices of toast sandwiched together with jam, a small croissant and a packet of crisps. Also provided was some juice and water. It was worth it though, to be able to stay out in the park for the extra time. Leave a Comment Theme: Breakfast

At the BBQ by grets A BBQ was laid on under the starry sky to celebrate the New Year. Chefs cooking sausages, steaks, chicken wings and ribs over open coals, whilst vegetables, jacket potatoes and salads were available from seperate tables. The tables had been moved from the under-cover restaurant to the open air for the occasion too, and it was a great way to see the new year in.
My favourite from the BBQ was the long curly sausage, and everything on the dessert table was nice too. Leave a Comment Theme: Barbecue

In the restaurant by grets Open sided restaurant in its own building fronted by huge lawns with the bar to one side and the reception to the other. Staff are very friendly and helpful and seemed to know us after the first meal. The furniture is chunky and rustic, and the seats somewhat low for the table. We requested some cushions the first meal, and after that the cushions were in place each time we arrived. Breakfast, lunch and dinner consist of self service buffet. The food is fairly plain, but very pleasant and plentiful. For breakfast there is a chef who will cook your eggs to order, including some great omelettes and pancakes. At lunch and dinner, soup is servied at the table, followed by self service buffet. There are several salads, a couple of vegetarian dishes, usually a carvery, rice and potatoes plus a few other dishes.
My two favourite dishes here were the breakfast omelettes with cheese, ham, onion, tomato anc chilli; and the chick pea curry. The salads were also very good. Leave a Comment Theme: Eclectic/International

Kenyan's have a fun way of celebrating Birthdays. At your request, they will pre-make a cake which will be delivered at your table at the end of the meal. The birthday affair consists of all employees lining up single file, going from table to table, showing your name to the other guests, each in turn, gradually joining in on the festivities and singing the Kenyan version of happy birthday: "Jambo Jambo - Hakuna Matata...Jambo Jambo - Hakuna Matata" Cooks, waiters, restaurant managers, etc. all join in dancing around the dining room, beating on pots, pans, glasses and anything else that will make noise before finally arriving at your table with a cake complete with sparkler! Great fun and makes for some wonderful picture oppourtunities. The party culminates in the english version of "Happy Birthday" with everyone in the restaurant joining in. The village's grandmother by SumTingWong Eating is the Masai Mara is extremely limited in places to go. However, your choises are still huge. You are normally dependent on your lodge for meals, which, in my case at Rikeros Lodge were excellent mixes of Kenyan and British. If you want to eat in a Masai village hopefuly your lodge and or guides can arrange it. I visited a tiny six family village and the experience was great.
There are some great foods in Kenya, and some include the: Alvacados, Beef, Chicken, Potatoes.. and many more... Leave a Comment Theme: LocalAddress: Masai Mara

If you eat in the lodges you will drop a lot of money. There are few options here so stock up in Nairobi for the stores you will need if you are camping. Talek town 2 km away from the budget camping options around the Talek gate has some stores. You can get water, bread, eggs, some vegetables, as well as toilet paper, soap, oil, and other basic stuff.
