Jumping with Masai's

by georeiser

The Masai's are funny people and enjoy competition with foreigners. Few foreigners can beat a Masai when it comes to high jumping. The Masai's in Nairobi or other tourists places have made this to a business and expect some money for jumping. However this it not the case on the coutryside in Rift Valley. The photos are from Rift Valley, and the Masai's just started to jump beside the foreigners. The history: Jumping dance is a part of a ritual ceremony of the Masai warrior. It can involve many days of singing and dancing. The dance is called "adumu" or "aigus" by the locals, and is also a competitive jumping. A circle is formed by the warriors, and one or two at a time will enter the center to begin jumping while maintaining a narrow posture, never letting their heels touch the ground. Members of the group may raise the pitch of their voices based on the height of the jump.

Great Rift Valley viewpoint

by georeiser

A popular viewpoint of the trench is only 2 hours drive from Nairobi. There are many stops at the edge of the trench, where safari cars on their way to Masai Mara usually stops to let the tourists see the steep hillside and the view. The Great Rift Vally is a continuous geographic trench that runs 6000 km from Syria to the border of Malawi/Mocambique. The lakes along the eastern part of Africa were formed as the result of the rift, and contains some of the largest and deepest freshwater lakes in the world.

Masai Mara

by tompt

The famous Masai Mara is bordering the Serengeti park in Tanzania. Wildebeest and zebra migrate from one park to the other in the millions. We visited in october and most of the wildebeest were gone back to Tanzania. We did see alot of lions tough, and they were busy making the next generation too...More animals in the Masai Mara can be found at our Masai Mara page.

Birdwatching at Lake Naivasha

by tompt

Lake Naivasha is one of little freshwater lakes in the Great Rift Valley. The size of the lake varies a lot, according to rainfall. The lake is famous for its over 300 birdspecies living here. You can make a boattrip to see the hippos, or go on a walkingsafari on Crescent Island, as there are no predators on the island it is perfectly safe to walk amongst the antilopes.Visit our Lake Naivasha page to see more pictures.

Rift Valley Lookout

by Zanzibargirl

See my Intro page for some more photos. A really good view of Africa, with extinct volcano's and more to be seen. This was absolutely amazing. Touts sell their wares and tell stories of the animals they carve, Masai blankets wave in the wind, and their is an air of excitement as you stare out at the varstness of what makes up the Rift Valley. Which stretches miles apon miles.... and can be aparently seen from the moon...
