Jaribu Kiswahili

by muguruki

There are a multitude of languages spoken in Kenya. English is widely spoken but learning a few words of Swahili does make a difference.Swahili phrase books can be bought in Nairobi if you do not bring one with you, as well as books on several of the other 50 or so languages in Kenya including Sheng the Nairobi street slang.

Nyahururu

by muguruki

The town of Nyahururu in Central Province is home to 70m high Thompson Falls on the Ewaso Nyiro River. The nearby T falls lodge is handy for a cold Tusker whilst looking at the falls. Not to far away along the river is Hippo pool supposedly the highest place in Kenya where you can see hippos. Because of the high altitude you may well see athletes training in the area the town is also home to some of Kenya's finest distance runners. Apart from the obvious thing to do here like stare at the falls all day, there is also an excellent market that has some of the best fruit I have seen in Kenya. The town is full of plenty of cheap eateries where you can fill up on a plate of mataha.

Lake Bogoria

by muguruki

The view as you approach Lake Bogoria is amazing. You can see the salt water lake as you approach it with the high escarpment of the rift behind but aligning the lake is a think band of pink. It is not until you get closer to the lake that you realise that this pink band is a mass of pink flamingoes. Stunning! As you pass the western shore of the lake you will pass several hot springs you can feel the hot spray from theses as you get closer. The ground here as you near the springs resembles the crust of a rhubarb crumble my Nana used to make and in places it is as strong as my Nana's crumble and it is easy to break through into what is boiling water and you may become a sticky sweet dessert yourself.

The unknown West - Lake Victoria

by sphynxxs

The second largest freshwater lake of the world, so big that you cannot see Uganda at the other side of the lake, Lake Victoria is also a great spot for people who love to watch birds or go fishing. As the Western region of Kenya is less promoted in international tourism, it is still a bit of an unknown part of Kenya, though there are a number of hotels in Kisumu, as well as some lodges in the surrounding

Visit a Masai village

by pepemorris11

Visit a Masai village. We were fortunate to go at the right time when a wedding was taking place. A lot of traditional dancing involving jumping up and down with their spears. The warriors have a lot of stamina! A very educational and colourful visit. We were invited into their homes made by women. They are made of cowdung and mud. Very basic but home. The village was surrounded by a hedge of bushy thorns to protect the villagers from wild animals. You may have to pay a fee to enter the village.

Masai Mara Reserve

by glabah

One of the major tourist attractions in Kenya is the Masai Mara reserve. This is an extension of Tanzania's Serengeti, though the scenery is slightly different. There are more hills around Masai Mara, but looking across the river into Tanzania it is quite clear that beyond there is a lot of flat land. This international border crossing wildlife preserve is naturally a large tourist attraction for those who come to see the wildlife. The primary recreation activity and attraction there are the game drives, where you go out and look at the animals. One of the most famous features of this game park is the wildebeest migration. (see photo 3 for a great telephoto shot by Cindy L.)We stayed at the Masai Mara Sopa Lodge, and this is an excellent lodge. However, if possible I suggest staying at the Keekorok Lodge instead because it has a water hole that allows for great game viewing. As the Masai...

How to Safari in Kenya

by CelticSu

One way you can do it is to pick one of the lodges, make that your home base, and safari from there, using the lodge's guides. We stayed at the following, all of which were lovely and had lots of animals living in the wild:Sweetwaters Tented Camp-Ol Pejeta Rhino Reserve (we saw 4 of the Big Five on our first afternoon game drive)Samburu Intrepids ClubMount Kenya Safari ClubLake Elementaita Lodge (Kekopey Ranch-Lord Gaibraith Cole)Sarova Mara Camp in the Maasai Mara (this was the most crowded of all the places we stayed)All of these places were top-notch, but you will see different animals in different places - if you can possibly do more than one place, you'll get a better feel for the country as a whole.Spend as much time as you can possibly afford - and I guarantee it will still not be enough! AND you should make your plans from home - don't wait to get to Nairobi and try to make...

DONT MISS NAIVASHA

by tvjournalist_1975

If you are intersted in wildlife please visit lake Naivasha where you will get a rare opportunity to get up close with hippos. Its a unique experience to take a boat ride while scores of these creatures swim alongside. They are harmless unless you disturb them. Its only a 2 hours drive from Nairobi.

Read a Kenyan novel before you go

by muguruki

Cockraoch Dance - Meja MwangiIf you really want to know what life in the downtown bars of Nairobi is like read this book before you go. This is not onlt one of my favourite African novels its possibly my favourite novel of all time. there are not many books I've read more than once and I've read "Cockroach dance" 3 times. Dead funny and Mwangi gets the bar room banter spot on.Going Down River Rd - Meja MwangiMore downtown Nairobi life but without the humour of Cockraoch dance. Matigari - Ngugi Wa ThiongoPossibly Ngugi's best novel, it's probably right to say its a fairytale rather than a novel. Ngugi has an uncanny knack of rubbing people up the wrong way and there's nowt wrong with that. That is possibly why after shortly its publication Matigari was banned by the government of the day thinking that the character was a real person trying to overtrow the government.Devil on The Cross -...
