Climbing Mt. Kenya

by cimicak

Due to location directly on the equator this mountain can be climbed by people without any alpinistic experience and gears (Lenana peak). This, plus wonderfull landscape-scenery and possibility to observe many animals during the ascent, are reasons why the days spent on Mt. Kenya were so amazing, being interesting intermezzo between obligatory safaris.

Kericho, the heart of the tea area

by sachara

Kericho is the heart of the Western Kenya's tea plantation area. Everywhere in this area you see the green hills covered with with tea-plantations. The closest plantation from the towncentre is the one behind the Tea hotel, north-east of the centre at the road to Nakuru.Because of the afternoon showers Kericho has a good climate for growing tea. The showers are mostly brief and refreshing. Yes, Kericho is a wet place, but also very green.Ole Kericho was a Maasai chief, who was killed in the 17th century by the Gusii tribe. The town takes its name from this chief. On our way to Nakuru we visited Kericho only for 1-2 hours for shopping and lunch.

Gospel Concerts

by firedawg550

Kirk Franklin was in town, so I hopped in a matatu and headed over to the stadium after church. By the way, GO TO CHURCH IN NAIROBI! Anyway, this was the craziest concert I've ever been to, and it was Kirk Franklin! Kenyans LOVE Jesus, and it was a moving experience. There are always gospel artists in town so check it out.

Flooding

by ChristaV

We were there in the rainy season and it was really terrible to see how the people had to struggle to get along with all the roads that were flooded and looked like mini rivers. Here you can see how the locals are trying to walk on the "pavement"

Bamburi Nature Trail - just outside Bamburi Beach

by gonetotheuk

Directly across the main road opposite the driveway to Bamburi Beach Hotel is a lovely park called Bamburi Nature Trail (or Butterfly Park). No need for a taxi, it's right outside the hotel! I forget the admission price, only a few quid, but it was well worth it. We saw plenty of monkeys, and some tiny deer like things (I think called dik dik, or something like that), as well as some bigger antelope (or something simliar anyway - you would have thought we would have studied up more on african animals before the trip! sorry lol). Take plenty to drink - it can be HOT! But it's a nice trail through forested areas and past several small lakes and ponds. Make a nice change from the beach or sunbeds. JUST DO IT! You won't be sorry.

Spend a day getting bladdered in the Green

by muguruki

Not what it used to be but still one of my favourite bars in Nairobi, Kenya or the world. The Green is situated on Latema road just the wrong side of town but near enough to the centre of Nairobi. The first time I entered the Green it was standing room only, these days it is not as busy, but get in there on a weekend at the end of the month when pay packets have just been opened finding a seat is not so easy. It wasn’t so long ago that this place used to be open 24 hours a day. In those days you could quite happily drink through the night sometimes not realising it was morning till the paper boys came around the tables selling that morning’s paper. In recent years the door is closed at midnight weather there are people inside or not, the bouncer on the door will open the door when you are ready to stagger home. There is serious building work going on at the moment above Nairobi's finest...

Mt. Kenya

by bjgerber

Mt. Kenya is a great place to do some trekking. It's the second tallest mountain in Africa and is filled with beautiful scenary. I took a 3 day trek although there are other routes. You need guides and probably a cook. One of the lodges is at around 14000 feet. Mt. Kenya has 3 peaks, the one we summited is over 16,000 feet. It's a quite diverse trek and you'll probably see a bit of wildlife along the way. I loved every minute of this trek.

Nakuru National Park

by bjgerber

This is a great and inexpensive little park only a couple of hours from Nairobi...it's inbetween Nairobi and Eldoret. This park is somewhat small...but the concentration of animals is great. This is a great place to see rhinocerous...I've been several times and saw many rhinocerous everytime. There are not many lions in this park...but I have seen them as well as leopards. There are a couple lodges to stay in...they are very nice. I've also camped in the park and heard the roar of lions at night. I would say the best place to say is a small cottage located within the park. It is a cheap place to stay although you'll need to bring your own food because it has it's own kitchen. This is a pretty big cottage and I stayed there with several friends. At night there was a hippo right outside the window...we watched while we ate. Within the park is Lake Nakuru which is covered with flamingos and...
