Don't mess with Cape Buffalo

by Bwana_Brown

Another one of Africa's 'big 5' game animals, the Cape Buffalo is a very impressive animal in its own right. They move around in good-sized herds, with one bull in charge of everything and a few younger ones hanging around as well, along with the Cows and their offspring. Standing 5-ft tall at the shoulder and weighing up to 1800-lb, a bull Cape Buffalo is a force to be reckoned with! This particular specimen gave us an even better appreciation of his bulk when he turned side-on in the 2nd photo. Unlike the males, with their very thick horn 'bosses' that meet on top of their heads, the females have horns which are a bit more delicate in nature (3rd photo). That particular one also has the usual Oxpecker or two on her side helping to keep the insect bother down to a minimum. The final photo shows the rest of the herd following along in the footsteps of the the big bull who is calling the...

We are onto the Lions!

by Bwana_Brown

Once we had settled into our early-morning and evening game viewing drives in our rental car, it did not take long before we were into the serious 'Big 5' animal stuff. We had several encounters with various groups of lions over the few days that we were in Amboseli, and they were always a pleasure to observe. No problems as long as you stay in your vehicle. These Game Park animals are used to tourists driving by and do not get concerned, while you have a good look at whatever it is they are doing at that particular time of the day! Although, I will have to admit, the lioness in the 3rd photo does seem to be keeping a close eye on us.

Maasai village, school

by sachara

When we visited the Masai Village, we could also meet the teacher of the local outdoor school with his pupils. The kids of all ages of the primary school were sitting in a row at small benches on the dusty ground with only a little bit shade of a few small trees. The Maasai teacher explained us about the school and how he managed to give the lessons in these very basic circumstances.

Mombasa's old Fort Jesus

by Bwana_Brown

On my earlier 1973 solo trip through East Africa, I had travelled further east than Amboseli, ending up on the Indian Ocean coastline, where I was astounded to see a postcard-like fortress guarding the harbour of Mombasa! It turns out that the Portugese began building Fort Jesus in 1593 as part of their trade network along the tenuous routes to their far-Eastern possessions in India, China and Indonesia. By 1598 the fort was ready for habitation but its construction continued until completion in 1631. Not paying much attention to the details of history in this part of the world, I had never realized that this once-British colony had long-before been Portugese territory.Fort Jesus has had its share of battles, changing hands more than once over the centuries as both the locals and Arab slave-traders battled the Portugese for control of this coral outcrop at the entrance to Mombasa. Its...

Amboseli Park

by Acirfa

Amboseli is a land of giants, both elephants and the most glorious and impressive of all, not an animal but Mt Kilimanjaro. Although Kili lies in Tanzanian land, one of the most impressive views to beheld is within the Amboseli area, it's snow capped summit peaking through the clouds on good days. The scene enough to create breathlessness of ones whole being, it's an image of Africa so familiar and yet so awesome. The plains of Amboseli are wide, dry and stretch on so far into the distance it's almost impossible to note where the plains end and the big sky begins.Amboseli is renowned for its elephant populations and large herds. With vast swamplands drawing the elephant in particular to their lush vegetation to browse.Accessing Amboseli National Park is difficult without private transport. Most visitors come to here as part of a Safari package from Nairobi or in a Hire Car. Those bringing...

Wild animals in their natural enviroment

by croisbeauty

I have learned alot about wild animals and their life in savannah. Our guide shared with us some very interesting facts and stories. The elephant sleeps only two hours during the day, while the giraffe never sleeps at all. The most dangerous animal of savannah is the hippo, fact which surprised all of us. Good news is, hippo do attack mankind (even when in vehicles) only if extremely disturbed or when defending baby hippo.Just for a fact, the lion is called king of the animals but he is only the fourth most damnegerous animal of savannah.

Wild animals in their natural enviroment

by croisbeauty

Most of the animals do not care much for the vehicles in which we were turn around the parks. Of course, they were guarded but pretty much uninterested for our presence, except for the african wild pig runing away all the time because this animal have alots of enemies in savannah. As I was told, wild pig is kind of juicy plunder for all carnivorous animals from savannah.

Kilimanjaro

by croisbeauty

Most of Kenyans consider Kilimanjaro as some kind of holy mountain and I felt lots of proud and awestruck in their voices when talking of it. It rises up from nearly flat ground, reaching six thousands meters in height, and is the highest peak in whole of Africa. I wasn't there, leaving it for my next visit to Kenya, but even this pics, taken from the far distance, conjure up in fancy how mighty the mountain is.

Fort Jesus

by Acirfa

Fort Jesus overlooks the entrance the Old Port of Mombasa and was built by the Portuguese in 1593. It was erected to protect their trade route to India. Today it is held as one of the finest designed 16th century Portuguese military architectures.Until the British made Kenya a colony, the Fort was under the control of each the Portuguese and the Omani Dynasty, changing hands at least nine times. Under British rule it became a prison but in 1958 it was turned into a monument.
