Local transport

by sachara

With local busses and matutu's you can visit nearly every town and village. At Kitale are normal matutu's and Nissan matutu's for twice the price. The bus and matutu parks are often rather chaotic, but the people are very friendly to show you the right matutu.

I believe that it is far better to get a good local driver than to take a rent-a-car.Local people have eyesights measured scoring about 5 or 6. And they also have their safari drivers network that they exchange informations in the field.

At times you will take a PROP-PLANE to yourpark! This is my first time flying into thick clouds of fog! Right after lift off from NAIROBI!Gladly it only last about 10mins. But, it was fun in it's own way!

by plane...sometimes you get cheaper charter flights into mombasa than to nairobi so check that out first.train, bus, matatu or if you're a large group, hire a car or organise a tour van with one of the travel agents.....my favourite is let's go travel (check for contact details on the web)

We flew into Nairobi on British Airways. We had to change from Gatwick to Heathrow, which was a nightmare. If we had to do it over, we would make sure we flew into Heathrow and out of Heathrow. We have heard that KLM is an easy carrier to get there on. If you fly into Gatwick, you will have to get your bags, take them to customs, get a voucher from the airline for transportation, turn in the voucher for a bus pass, stand in line, figure out which of the four terminals at Heathrow you are going to, get your bags on the bus, get them off the bus, and on and on and on.We were in a minibus supplied by Pollmans tour company and it worked quite well. In the Ngorogoro crater we were in a land rover. Both had pop up tops so that you can stand up and take pictures without getting out.

From Nairobi to Mombasa by bus, is very safe and costs around of KSH500 (~USD8) You get there in 7 or 8 hours (by night). Train is more expensive but very crowded and almost no difference between 1st and 2nd class.

This quiet-looking bus is a real monster to drive over rough roads. The driver could easily participate to World Cup rallyes. He was driving at 100-120 kms along dusty roads, full of holes, beasts crossing the roads, kids and masais everywhere. If you have fear when someone else is driving, avoid safaris. You could die of fear.Sometimes we asked him to slow down. He always laughed and said 'kenyan driving style', and accelerated.Kenya has one of the lowest percentage of vehicles per hundred people, and at the same time one of the highest incidence of accidents of the whole Africa. No problem believing it.When a car or a truck crushes and possibly takes fire, they simply put the wreck aside of the road and leave it to decay and become rusty.

I have only ever flown from London Heathrow and Gatwick Airports. Twice I flew courtesy of Kenya Airways and once with a cut price airline called Monarch. Let me deal with Monarch first DON'T USE 'EM, EVER for long haul flights! For this flight they had removed the two of the toilets and two drinking fountains from an Airbus A20 and replaced them with too many seats. Having spent an 11 hour flight in a seat that refused to recline Monarch are not a favourite of mine!! Kenya Airways are excellent, they have been taught their art under the capable tuition of KLM, and in the air at least are very good indeed. Many flights to or from UK will stop at Amsterdam, the Dutch connection. They are all no-smoking and have taken between 9 and 11 hours, usually on Boeing 737s.Kenya Airways inside Kenya is an interesting prospect. Administratively (i.e. on the ground), they are not good either...
