Nairobi-Scam City

by Buckz

A fool and his money are easily parted. In Nairobi it is not just the fools. " You are from Jibrovia! I'm going to University there next year! Tell me about Jibrovia?" Leading to "My friends and I crossed the border from Uganda a few months ago- we have no Money"or"I'm not going to ask you for money" leading to "I have no money"and quite a few others. Old worn out scams that are all listed in Lonely Planet and Rough Guides, but someone is falling for them, cos they keep trying. Now for the best bit. Having given over some cash (what is the Harm, you have it, they haven't) NOW part 2 Enter a fake policeman arresting you, taking to somewhere to discuss your crime of giving cash to beggars, Threatening, menacing, and lightening your pockets of their contents. It is a terrible thing to say, but you should not talk to strangers in the street in Nairobi at all. There are plenty of well run...

Beware of mango's

by Maeve_81

Sounds like a terrible horrormovie...No, if you don't take malaria pills, don't eat the mango's from the Kenya coast. They can be infected with malaria.NOTE : I got a few reactions on this tip telling me that this isn't accurate. But I'll leave it here because I got warned several times for the mango's. Maybe this is a local believe from the people in the western part of Kenya?

Harassment of Animals for Tourists Is Not Fair

by no1birdlady

We were on the Masai Mara looking for animals. Our driver spotted a pride of lions lying in the shade in grass that was the same color as they are. He parked the van on the side of the dirt road where we had a good view of them with our binoculars. As we were watching, 2 jeeps from the lodge came up and drove right into them forcing them to get up and go out into the sun. One came right by our van and I was able to get a good photo of her but I was upset that these unthinking people had disturbed them. When you go to see wildlife, you should want to observe them carrying on their daily lives. It is not good for them to be constantly disturbed just for the entertainment of tourists. Later we also found a leopard lying up on a rock. We were parked a way back watching him when the same(I think) 2 green jeeps came up and went around us and drove really close to the leopard. The animals here...

Easy on the jewellry

by joolssss

Now if you are planning on exploring I would recommend you take off any uneccessary jewellry or anything that looks expensive. In the towns and backstreets, these people do not have huge amounts of cash or a lot of food to eat, dont tempt them into becoming thieves, just leave the temptation in your hotel room. Same goes for cameras etc.

heat! take care!

by Kentishlad

Beware of the effect of the heat when doing things you might otherwise take for granted. I undertook a relatively modertate cycle ride to and through Hells Gate NP and basically collapsed at the end - rest, water and salt required. This even though I had plenty of fluids with me.

Sea Urchins

by joolssss

These may also be talked of as sea hedgehogs, be careful not to stand on them as they leave their spikes in you and are very painful (my friend floated into one while snorkelling and had to call the doctor to take it out, she said it was very painful)buy yourself some beach shoes to protect your feet! Go to the website below for a list of stings and bites and how to treat them.

Thieves, robbery and carjacking

by Suet

http://www.unon.org/unoncomplex/security_advice.php check this out for up to date security information. We call it Nairobbery for a very good reason. Don'ts are: wear jewellery especially gold, have a snatchable bag, walk in Uhuru Park, look like you have money, flash cameras around, walk around at night, break down at night, choose reliable vehicles (HAH!), use your mobile phone in the streetDo's wear gardening clothes, under dress, keep a sharp lookout for trouble at all times, know where you are and the nearest police station or Ultimate Security station. Keep an eye out when filling up at petrol stations.....I guess it's no worse than New York, it's just that life is so cheap and people are desperate........

Dusty roads

by grets

Most of the road is covered with this red dust. Don't wear anything white, as it will be red by the time you get back to the lodge.Really you should wear as natural colours as possible to avoid scaring away the wildlife.

Bad driving

by grets

We saw some awful driving on our trips in Kenya, many of which resulted in accidents. Most safari companies have very courteous drivers, but that cannot be said for all unfortunately. If you are driving yourself, do take care.

Beggers/Pick Pockets

by Tallchick80

I found that it was a very common thing to have women and children come to me and beg for money. However, once you give money away, you find yourself surrounded by more people wanting more. It's best not to give money away, even to the women who have the babies tied on to their backs. I don't say this to be cruel, but a lot of the time, those babies aren't theirs and it's merely a scam to try and win your heart (and your cash!) My best advice is to tell you to be very firm and street smart. Don't carry large amounts of money with you, don't keep it all in one place, and keep it someplace safe and secure. If you are making a business transaction in a public market, or someplace with a lot of people, try and conceal how much money you have and don't flaunt it around.
