Keep doors locked!

by Tallchick80

It's really important that when you are in a car, ALWAYS make sure that your door is locked and your windows up high enough so that people cannot reach inside. Car jackings and robberies are not uncommon, and it's better to take precautionary steps to make yourself more unattractive to a potential thief. So, if you are traveling, always make sure to use your locks!

Don't wear jewellery

by hubba78

my mother ignored the warnings... and had her gold earrings ripped from ears as we walked down the street in Nairobi. My brother caught the offender in a neighbouring park & then the locals, proceeded to abuse the young theif! It appears that petty crime does not sit well with the public - perhaps they have to deal with it themselves are police are corrupt & lazy.

Don't drink the tap water

by SamuiDean

Do not drink the tap (fawcet for you US folks) water in the hotels, it will make you ill. Buy bottled water. In our hotel the room staff used to supply us with a flask of clean drinking water every day.Don't use the tap water for anything apart from washing, don't even use it for cleaning your teeth. Use bottled water.

People hassling you on the beach

by SamuiDean

You will find this a lot along the beaches of Kenya, especially around the hotel complexes. As soon as you step onto the beach the locals will swarm around you trying to get you to buy local wood carvings, etc. or to take you out on their boats snorkelling. They can be quite persistent and you have to be firm and tell them NO.

Taking pictures

by Maeve_81

Many people don't like you to take their picture, some even believe that a picture takes away bits of their soul. Consider that before taking a picture.Others want money (those are NOT the ones who believe the soul story) or a copy of the picture. And there are others who go berserk to see the result of the picture on your digital camera...

Don't get eaten

by Maeve_81

In a wild park, don't go out of the car.Especially in high grass, you just don't see where the animals are.I remember watching a lion walking trough the high grass and she leigh herself down and the next moment 7 lions came out of the grass. You just can't see them.

No Cameras in Narok.

by Buckz

A visible camera is an invitation to be annoyed in Narok (the last town before the Masai Mara. People will ask if you want to take their photo, no charge, UNTIL IT IS TAKEN- then there is a charge, and a gathering crowd- and who would you believe-the tourist or the local? It is easy to get photos in Nakuru or other towns. Put the camera away in Narok. Without a camera it is a great place, with a bustling market, a diverse mix of people (Masai herding animals, street traders, etc)

Be careful who you trust

by madbiker200

Meet and make friends with local people, but be careful. It can be a little intimidating when everyone knows someone who can do a "tour" with you at half the cost of the recognised tour companies. We met a "local", actually a Ugandan lad, who turned out to be very genuine and honest, and took us in a taxi that belonged to his friend, all over the area, and could arrange any trip we wanted at a discount. A real character, and eventually a friend, but be warned, they aren't all like that. Also he told us that there is a lot of violence between competitors for local tourist business.

The Nairobi traffic can be dangerous to!

by mauritsh

During rush hour it is very busy, so you always get in to late where ever you go. Try to stay out of it. Don't forget here live 2,5 million people. Don't talk to strangers in the street, most of the time they end up being common thieves who try to get your money. I know their tricks by now.

Using public transport.

by mauritsh

Be very carefull when using any form of transport. The blue Metro Shuttles are ok and also the Taxi's that are ordered for you by friends that live there. When you travel by yourself or with someone in a car, keep the doors closed and Shut, so they cannot pull you out.The Matatu's are always packed and they drive like idiots, the drivers often chew "mirra" to keep them awake, this drug is illegal in Tanzania, but not here.
