trekking with Basotho ponies. by sachara The Basotho pony is famous because it can easily move in rough mountaineous areas without breaking its legs. With its soft hoofs the pony has more grip a the rough and irregular soil. The possesion of a pony is rather common in Lesotho. It's nice to make a ponyride during your stay in Lesotho. There is a Pony Trekking Centre, but also at many lodges you can arrange the hiring of a pony. We made a half day tour to a nice village in the mountains. It is not necessary to be an experienced rider. Leave a Comment

rock paintings by sachara We had heard there must be some rockpaintings near the village we visited during the pony ride. Some boys brouhgt us to the place, which is not easy to find on your own. We had to go under a overhanging rock. The paintings were a bit fainted, but still clear enough to recognize the four human beings. There must be more rockpaintings in Lesotho, you have to ask the local people, where you can find them. To see the four human beings click to enlarge the picture. Leave a Comment

Thaba-Bosiu entrance by sachara When you climb the Thaba-Bosiu and reach the top, you will see a heap of stones at the entrance. Our guide explained us that it is a custom to bring or take a stone and add this stone to this heap, everytime you enter Thaba-Bosiu. So he did and so we did. The guide told us, that the present king Letsie III visits Thaba-Bosiu with his uncle every year at Liberation Day. They slaughter an ox and stay for three days at the mountain. village in Lesotho by sachara When you in Lesotho it's worth not to stay in Maseru, but go up country. Every where in Lesotho are nice small villages to visit. We visited some villages at the plain and some at the foot of the escarpment. In many villages you will see the traditional round huts, made of the natural materials of the countryside. The Basotho people are very hospitable. They like to help you and are proud to show some sights in their neighbourhood. Leave a Comment

Thaba-Bosiu by sachara The views from the summit of Thaba-Bosiu or "mountain by night'' are fantastic. You see the surrounding mountains chains, the plains with some villages and the Qiloane pinnacle, This pinnacle is the symbol of Lesotho and has given the inspiration for the Basotho hat. The guide showed us some remains, wells and a meeting place. There was not much to see at these places, so you need a lot of imagination and an enthusiastic explaining guide like we had. The grave yard of the royal family is the most interesting sight of Thaba-Bosiu. The whole royal family is buried here. The guide showed us the grave yard and explained extensivily nearly every grave of Moshoeshoe's family. Leave a Comment

valley east of Maseru by sachara Lesotho is at nice country for hiking or pony riding. The lowest point of ''the kingdom in the sky'' is at 1000M and the highest at 3.500M. There are beautiful mountains, escarpments, nice valleys and plains with scattered villages to explore. The Basotho people is friendly, helpful and self-assured. They speak Sesotho, but also English. There are good topographic maps of Lesotho for sale at the Land, Surveys & Physical Planning Department in Maseru. Leave a Comment

on the top of Thaba-Bosiu by sachara The Thaba-Bosiu or ''mountain at night'' is the fortress of King Moshoeshoe the Great and the most important historical site in Lesotho. At this place Moshoeshoe founded Lesotho in the 19th century. From the visitors centre down at the road a guide accompanied us to the top of the mountain and told us its history: ".....Between 1828 and 1865 the Basotho atop Thaba-Bosiu repulsed invaders several times, like the Matiwane, the Raiders (Kornnas), the Ndebele of Mzilikazi, the British (Sir George Cathcart's troops) and the Orange Free State Kommando led by Commandant Wepener. The attack by Wepener troops was the last one in Moshoeshoe's life time. Wepener was killed at the Khubedu Pass ( or Wepener's Pass) ....". At the top of Thaba-Bosiu was not much to see, but we enjoyed the walk and the explanations of the guide. Entrance: 5 Rand and a tip for the guide. Leave a Comment Directions: East of Masuru.

In my mind, a multi-day traverse along the top of the Drakensberg Escarpment is the peak of African alpine adventures. Kilimanjaro may be higher, but the Drakensberg is light years beyond in both wilderness experience and scenic beauty. Where crowds inhabit the tracks of Kili, you can walk for a week or more here in the Drak without seeing another soul. The ‘normal’ traverse - all routes are mostly trail-less affairs for the majority of the way - runs from the Sentinel/Chain Ladder trail on the west edge of the Royal Natal National Park over to the Cathedral Peak Hotel, a trek that will take you 4-6 days. Another week would take you over Cleft and Champagne Peaks and maybe as far as Giant’s Castle. Or you could just continue to walk towards Sani Pass and beyond. Just a matter of time and physical condition. Be aware that you will need to be in good shape to accomplish this trek. You need to be fully equipped for the weather and have to carry everything upon your back. You need to be able to navigate with map and compass and keep your wits about you when the dragon mists swirl about you. An alpine guide is of invaluable help for someone not acquainted with this range for it is easy to get yourself into trouble out here. Leave a Comment

Don’t miss it. It is in the main road of Kingsway. There you can find a lot of information of anywhere in the country. They can help you to find accommodation in the city. They have brochures, maps, postcards… and a lot of very useful information. BUT, don’t trust in distances (Km). Neither in time needed to arrive to places. Roads are terrible in Lesotho and almost every route takes longer than expected. Leave a Comment

by zindara 42 km north of Maseru is the most important craft centre of the country. You can visit lots of shops and also craft centres where locals are making the handicrafts, specially tapestry. It is very interesting to see all the process, the wool, the painting, making the tapestries… And you can buy cheap souvenirs directly in the craft centres. Some of these craft centres are Hatooa-Mose-Mosali; Helang Basali Crafts of Lesotho; Lesotho Handicrafts; Elleloang Weavers; Seeta’s Design Jewellery, all in Teya-Teyaneng, as well as Setsoto Design in Tebetebeng close by.
