KATSE DAM

by zindara

This huge dam, is on the Malibamatso River. It was finished in 1997 and is the key of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. It is the second biggest dam in Africa. And the ambitious project managed to double the water supply of South Africa’s Vaal Dam. It is better to arrive here by 4X4, we went there in a normal car and it was tricky in some parts of the road). The road from Hlotse to Katse is about 120km s on a tar road. The alternative road from the South at Thaba Tseka is 41km of dirt road that a little slow going. The journey takes around one hour and a half. You can see beautiful mountains, valleys, spectacular views, gorges…

MORIJA: NATIONAL MUSEUM

by zindara

This village 45 km south of Maseru is the site of the National Museum. It is small but covers a lot of paleontology, ethnography and history aspects of Lesotho providing a good overview of the country. It does not open everyday, so check time-tables before going!

We done a 6-8 hour trek from the lodge to gates of paradise!its around 2500 metres up and has fantstic views for mileswe had a guide from the lodge at 10rand per hour plus tipwell worth itWe then drove all through the country, but having just a 2WD limited us - we drove round to Oxbow which has a pass at 2800metres which was beautiful passing past many villages

Driving

by Kanjoo

Lesotho has got some very good and brand new tarred roads built by UN. the best thing to do is to take one towards anywhere or nowhere and drive slowly... as soon as you would leave the town of Maseru.. you would find yourself in pure rural environments of an African kingdom.. the scenery is amazing.. and there are plenty of villages all around the roads..

Sani Pass

by Gili_S

Sani Pass is actually the road connecting the two countries, but it is also the name of the spot in the top of that mountain, height of 2873 meter high. It is a popular place up the mountains and can be a good place for organising your tour around the area, it has accommodation, restaurant, pub etc.

Hiking, bird watching and photographing

by Gili_S

Lesotho has its amazing landscapes and views, it is great place to go hiking, bird watching and for photographing. Unfortunately I did not spend long enough time in Lesotho and I was not lucky either with the weather is it was not snowing during my stay ;-)Otherwise I would probably make full my camera memory card.

Bushman Painting Pony Trek

by Jmill42

One of the attractions of the area are the bushman paintings, and is done by pony trek to the ridge above the gorge in which the paintings are located. The paintings are cool, though not overwhelmingly so. But, again, the terrain through which you have to go to get there is wonderful. Your pony guide will hand you off to a local guide who will lead you down into the gorge and to several spots where the paintings are visible.

Horse/Pony Rides

by Jmill42

If hiking isn't your thing, another great way to see the countryside is by way of horseback riding. While not your Andalusian-quality steed, these slow-moving and tame animals provide a safe way of exploring the area with less strain on the body. The guides make sure to keep you safe, leading you along routes suited to your riding ability and generally away from cliffs. Which is a good thing.

Hiking

by Jmill42

Lesotho has some amazing vistas, unique in Africa due to its topography. In and around the Malealea area, there are an infinite number of trails to hike, with mountains, river and streams dotting the landscape. you will be encouraged to trample right through people's backyards, treated as a wandering curiosity by the family as you do. It was one of my favorite memories of the place as I wandered around aimlessly.

DRAKENSBERG VISTAS

by mtncorg

The views from atop the Drakensberg Escarpment are difficult to convey in words and simple pictures. Remember, you have the wind, the silence - unless the rock baboons are shouting up at you from hidden crevices below. Light constantly changes as mists rise and swirl. Now you see a peak - or a range - and now you don't. You are not always walking right along the edge of the Escarpment, so that is what makes those moments when you are, that much more special. These are the moments that stay with you for your life. Click on the pictures for the full panorama.
