Sani Lodge

by kentishgirl

The Sani Lodge is a chalet like building perched on the edge of the mountain at the very top of the Sani Pass. This pub is in Lesotho but everything is priced in rand!It is something of a tourist trap to be honest, but most daytrippers will stop here. We ate a delcious lunch here, stood on the balcony and admired the views (it was cold and covered in cloud for some part), we just looked down on the cloud and eventually it cleared! This boasts as the highest pub in Africa and a stop here and a pic at the sign is inevitable!

Basotho Village

by kentishgirl

Visiting a Basotho Village was a highlight on our trip to Lesotho. The people in the village were so friendly! They all came out in true African style to stare and see what we were doing there! Our guide translated for us as we were led into a lady's home and ate some delicious bread she had baked. The villages are amazing, totally different to our villages. They usually own sheep and chickens, they lack water and electricity. Everyone is wrapped up in huge jumpers because it is so cold at this altitude.

Sani Pass

by kentishgirl

The Sani Pass is so beautiful and green, the sun was shining and we enjoyed an incredible journey up. We saw amazing views and posed for photos beside some fantastic scenery, we gazed at mountains and waterfalls, all the while going higher and higher into the mountains, as soon as we were at the top the change was amazing. Not only the change of landscapes, people, traditions and cultures - but the change of weather - it was freezing up here!

Lesotho

As soon as we crossed the border at the Sani Pass we knew we were in a different country.Lesotho is amazing, landlocked by South Africa, yet so very different. The local language is Basotho and this is the name by which the local people are referred to in this part of the country.I only saw a tiny section of this incredible country, but it has certainly left me wanting to go back for more. The people are so friendly and the landscape so beautiful.I was amazed how different Lesotho was to South Africa. As soon as you cross the border the poverty and poor economy are very evident.

Enter, or exit Lesotho via Sani Pass

by sunscreen202

Sani Pass is a legendary mountain pass between Lesotho and South Africa, known among the four wheel drive community as one of the ultimate vehicle challenges. Apart from the fact that it features potholes the size of bathtubs and hairpin turns that make your hair stand on end it's really spectacular and provides excellent views of South Africa. The SA border post is at the bottom of the pass, and the Lesotho one at the top. At the top of the pass there's also 'the highest pub in the world' at the Sani Top lodge. The drive into Lesotho, although not as spectacular, is highly recommended.

Visit Katse Dam

by sunscreen202

Katse Dam is located in central Lesotho and easily accessible via Butha Buthe on an excellent tar road with magnificent views and beautiful surroundings. There is a good visitor centre on the dam side that does tours of the damwall, and can point you in the right direction if you're looking for accommodation. The dam itself is spectacular, especially at sunset and sunrise. It's a photographer's paradise. There's also watersports being developed in the area.

Visit Morija

by sunscreen202

Morija is a small town south of Maseru, and home to Lesotho's only museum. It's a small one, but very interesting and informative... gives you a good overview of the history of the country, culture, and so on. It has a cafereria of sorts (these things are quite unique in Lesotho) and a nearby old church to take in if that's your thing. Definitely worth a visit, since the area around Morija also has a slighty different 'feel' than the rest of the country.

Lesotho

Have a local villager take you on hikes. There are beautiful waterfalls, swimming holes, mountains, rivers that you won't find on your own. Also, the ponytrek is a good way to end the week because you will be tired from all the hiking.

Pony Trekking

by zweiblumen

Pony trekking is fast becoming the most popular activity for tourists in Lesotho; the Basotho ponies are ideally suited to the rugged terrain of the highlands and are a great way for people to get out and enjoy the scenery. The most popular pony trekking centres are Malealea Lodge, the centre at God Help Me Pass and Semonkong Lodge.

Maletsunyane Falls

by MikeAtSea

One of the highest single-drop falls in Southern Africa - nearly twice as high as Victoria Falls, though a fraction of the width. These are very impressive, and can be visited on pony-trekking trails from both Malealea to the West and Molimo Nthuse to the North. The Falls are very close to Fraser's Semonkong Lodge, where one can so day trips to the Falls on foot on pony treks.
