    Temple of Zeus

Some distance away from the rest of the antiquities, the Temple of Zeus is well worth the effort to get there, as this really is one of the highlights of Cyrene.

The temple of Zeus was constructed to be larger than the Parthenon in Athens to signify the importance of the city of Cyrene.

The temple was built in the 5th century in Duric style, and measures 32m by 70m. It was surrounded by two rows of eight columns and two rows of 17 columns.

The temple was erbuilt in Hadrian's time after being damaged during the Jewish revolt 115-117, and almost completely destroyed during the earthquake of 365 AD. Italian archaeologists reconstructed the temple in 1963.

    Altar

The entrance to the temple was from the east, and only priests would be permitted inside the temple. Animal sacrifices would have been carried out here.
