Eastern Church

This is where the 50 panels of mosaics which are housed in the museum were found. Gaps in the floor now show how they were positioned.

The church survived until the 5th century, and the floor mosaics were laid between the years 592 and 540. The task was started by Bishop Macarius and finished by Theodores.

The church was constructed of square roughly hewn stone which were held together by mud.

Western Church

The western church is shaped like a cross and was decorated with Christian symbols of pagan origina. There is still a large mosaic in situ in the centr of the floor.
