Farwa Island was very nice. It's close to the border with Tunesia, and you need to hire a boat to get there. The Roman Villa Salin is defintely a must although an Italian archeology team was working there, and it took some persuasion to let us see it. Unique fresco's and mosaiques.The mosaic show here was at the Qasr Lybia, as we were not allowed to photograph the ones in Villa Salin.
The road from Derna to Shahat (had been known as Darnis and cyrene during the ancient greek occupation.This road is only 40 k.m long.Try driving your car along it to see differnt amazing sights and enjoy watching how the mountain hug the sea.You shouldn,t forget it....realy.It's 220 k.m far from Benghazi to the east.
It´s a far way south, but the Akakus mountains near the algerian border are certainly worth the way. Apart from the gorgeous landscape you can find prehistoric rock carvings. Access to the area is forbidden without a local guide - you can normally find somebody in nearby Ghat. Ghat is also a good place if you are interested in Tuareg blacksmith artisans, and most of the guides are Tuareg as well.
