    One size fits all -
    traditional Berber dress
    by TheWanderingCamel
Sensibly conservative dress will take you anywhere in Libya. Light, loose clothing will keep you far more comfortable that tight fitting gear, sleeves and high necks will keep the sun off shoulders and upper arms - and keep disapproving looks at bay. I found a light woollen shawl the ideal thing to carry with me in winter - it covered my head when I went into mosques and draped loosely over a sweater was all I needed to to be both warm and modest when out and about.

Libya's desert climate can be extreme - incredibly hot days cool off very rapidly into very cold nights when you're out in the desert, so be sure to bring something light and warm even if you're travelling in what are generally considered warmer months. Winter can get chilly even on the coast so come prepared for that, as well as for rain.
Sturdy well-fitting shoes are a must. Uneven footings at many sites, desert sand and broken city pavements are all hazards.

Bring lots of film if your camera is still steam-driven, and plenty of memory if you've gone digital. Libya is incredibly photogenic.

Don't forget to bring a good supply of non-contentious reading material and some other entertainment for yourself. Nightlife is virtually non-existent apart from restaurants, teahouses and the occasional coffee bar in the main cities.
Don't even think of bringing any alcohol - it is forbidden and bags are x-rayed on arrival.

    Backpack 65l

Most of the year is hot or extremly hot in Lybia, but nights, especially in a desert, are really chilly. Take some comfortable shirts and trousers. And remember, this is the Muslim world. Dress modest!

It's better to take any things you may need.

Take everything you need with you! I had many problems to buy a film (forget about the slides).

  • Lockable bags and cases. Remember, you might have to carry all your bags if the car breaks down - especially important in the summer when its very hot, so pack light.

Normal warm/hot weather clothes. It can be cold and windy in winter.

Take everything you may need with you before leaving home as you wont find the same thing in Libya.

Be very careful with cameras etc. Many builldings and sights are 'sensitive' to the security services. If in doubt, don't try to take a picture.

    You'll burn rapidly.

Pack a universal bath plug. A short-wave radio is nice to keep in touch with home news. And lots of books. But most important of all, slow down and just let yourself go with the flow there.

The wether can't be expressed in a few words. Those who said it was very dusty spoke about the desert but Libya is not fully a desert. The most comfertable summer in Libya is the green mountain which temperature and the humedity are very low.The average temperature here is 8 ºC during the winter and 30 ºC in the summer ,even though we can distinguish 3 phases of climate in Libya:
The desert climate: very little rain and a large difference between day and night temperature , and between summer and winter temperature.
The coast climate : or mediterranean sea climate which is famus .Non rainy, hot and highly humid summer and rainy ,warm winter.
The mountain climate: The green mountain (Al Jabal Al Akhdar ) has cold winter and very nice spring and summer .
Dust and wind happen sometimes at the end of spring and automn .The best period to visit Libya is from February to May and from september to december.

  • In hotels you'll find in the bathroom generally power outlets which correspond to continental European standards. In the room itself the UK outlets are the norm! Thus bring an adapter!!

    Ibrahim al-Koni
    The Bleeding of the Stone

    ISBN: 1-84437-015-1

    2003

The mouflon, a wild sheep prized for its meat, continues to survive in the remote mountain dessert of southern Libya.
Only Asouf, a lone bedouin who cherishes the desert and identifies with its creatures, know s exactly where it is to be found.
Now he and the mouflon together come under threat from hunters who have already slaughtered the once numerous desert gazelles.
When two visitors arrive one day, demanding that Asouf lead them to the sacred mouflon, Asouf is shaken to his core and must question every tenet of his father's faith.
This story of the confrontation between this bedouin and the two hunters combines pertinent ecological issues with a moving portrayal of traditional desert life and of the power of the human spirit to resist.

Ibrahim al-Koni; Lybians leading novelist, has been called a master of magical realism and the evocation of the desert.
