Ptolemais

by Luchonda

Ptolemais was in fact the first site i visited in Libya after a flight from Tripoli to Benghazi and than by bus to Ptolemais. My first impression - there is nothing to see but a museum.Covered with sand, the town's ruins survived in a relatively good shape to our times. West of the city stands a conspicuous and tower-like Hellenistic mausoleum, and there's also a Greek theater cut into the hillside behind the city.A must thing to do is to visit the museum itself before getting on the site - with a little bit of luck you will meet a perfect guide as introduction. ( His name Abdusalem Bazana)

The Berber tradition - western Libya

by Luchonda

Jebel Nafusa, the heartland of the Berber people who claim descendancy from the original inhabitants of Libya and maintain a strong cultural identity in this rugged part of the country. Remains of ancient Berber architecture dot the landscape (granaries and city-architecture), reflecting a lifestyle that was prevalent until only a couple of decades ago. The "grand chief" ordered those locals to move to the modern villages builded in the neighbourhood. But since tourism is a growing income since only 5 years, some of the inhabitants decided to go back to their original village.

The national museum in Tripoli

by Luchonda

A must to visit - take at least about three hours, take a good guide and enjoy archeologic highlights, definately the best in northern Africa, maybe in the world. Libyan gouvernment decided to gather (1988) all impressive statues and mosaics from the Tripolitanian and Cyrenian sites in one museum at Tripoli. Many other fantastic museums cherish their treasures aswell (Cyrene and Ptolemais)When yr time is limited, visit the first floor. Take care, pay a photo fee at the entrance, as usual, 5 ld for camera, 10 ld for video;

The spanish castle in Tripoli

by Luchonda

The castle, no longer used for defense purposes was renovated and opened in 1988 as the "Libyan Arab Jamahiriya Museum", housing cultural artifacts from all periods in Libya's history. A must to see. Visit at least the first and second floor to get an impression of Libyan history. It is located near the green square, the entrance to the national museum on the right, the medina to the left, enjoy the three and of what will be showed behind their walls, i assure, an experience of Arabic culture, history and actual way of living traditions.

Leptis Magna

by Luchonda

Without doubt the best preserved and most extensive ancient Roman city in the world. Originally a Phoenician settlement probably founded in the 6th century BC under the aegis of Carthage, Leptis Magna became a great metropolis under the Romans, particularly during the reign of Septimus Severus (193-211 AD),

Leptis Magna

by Luchonda

Leptis can be reached in about one and a half hours from Tripoli and guides are hired at the gates. Two hours provides a reasonable amount of time to get a feel of the city. More is better! There is also a museum worth visiting at Leptis, if this is included in your trip allow a full day for the excursion.Interesting sights : - The renovated arch of Septimius Severus ( The grim African)- The Nymfaeum- The Hadrianic baths (The way of construction leading to steam water)- The Severan Forum, next to the Basilica- The Theater

Benghazi

by Luchonda

"Benghazi is one of Libya's major economic centres. It is the country's second city and prinicipal city of Eastern Libya. Benghazi is also a bustling port and commercial centre."My personal opinion, it needs fast a global renovation plan, because, sorry, it is not an attractive city to be visited (see pic 3). I hope it will change during the next coming years.

Ghadames - the Yunis mosque

by Luchonda

The Yunis mosque, built in 1422, main mosque of the Bani Wazid part of the village. This simple mosque makes use of Roman pillars . Next to this mosque you will find the main square, or the place where the unique water distribution of Ghadames will be shown. (Al-kadus)

Sabratha

by Luchonda

The most spectacular site in Sabratha is the Theater, without doubt. Built during the reign of the Emperor Commodus (161-192 AD). It is a three-storey wall of columns making it possible to reflect the sound perfectly, without using high tec techniques. Make shure you will be at this Roman ancient spot when the light is still perfect for shooting pictures.Me personal opinion : more impressive than the one in LepcisOther interesting places- The Roman baths with some unique mosaics- The Mausoleum B- The Temple of Serapis at the western end of Sabratha,Minor interesting place- The Sabratha museum
