Great view from the highest point in Tana

by quapaw Updated Feb 1, 2006

Take a taxi to the Rova (the royal castle). The Rova itself it not very impressive because it is being restaurated at the moment (it burnt down a few years ago), but it is located at the highest point in Tana. You can get a close up view from the Rova and at the same time enjoy the wonderfull views from Tana. There also supposed to be a good restaurant, but I didn't go there though. Keep in mind that the taxi ride can be more expensive than you are used to in Tana. This becuase it is quite a climb up.

Watch a game of sports in Stade de Mahamasina

by quapaw Updated Feb 1, 2006

Every sunday there is something to do in the stadium. It is very cheap to get in and good fun to watch a game with the locals. Ussually football (soccer) but occasionally also rugby (Good fun to see the Malagasy haka, haha ) and other sports. There might also be a live local band playing if there is a tournament or a big match.
There is a also Jeu de boules club next to the stadium where you can watch the fanatic locals play tournamenst against each other.

A good place to hang around on a sunday if you have some time to spare.

    The Tana Zoo

by quapaw Written Feb 1, 2006

Parc Zimbazaza is quite a nice place to go to if you are in Tana for a while and not knowing what to do. I wouldn't say it is one of the highlights but it has a relaxed feel, especially since it is right in town. It is wide and has large open spaces. It is in fact a zoo inside botanical gardens. The variety of animals is not very big however. They have lemurs, chameleons, Crocodiles, variety of birds, huge tortoises and the biggest local attraction, the ostrich. One special thing is that they have Aye Aye's. If you wait untill dusk you might be able to see them up close (they are nocturnal). We asked the keeper and he took us inside the cage when we explained I was researching lemurs.
