Houses, tombs in the middle of nowhere

by Norali

Outside crowded cities and Tana suburbs, land is empty... Sometimes, you will see houses, tombs in the middle of nowhere: in craks, on hillside but above all, isolated...Enlarge the picture to know what I mean & compare it to 2nd picture (of crazy, air-polluted, noisy, crowded Tana). I more used to the sight of landscape on 3rd picture. In fact, the island is so spread out that the only means for inhabitants to benefit from modern amenities is to locate not far from urban centers So do inhabitants of this province. Also, while passing through such immensity, hosting just a few houses, I used to ask myself how those households would live if they got sick ? how could they get help in case of emergency (weather hazards, robberies, arsons.. and esp. if houses have to be surrounded by doro tanety fires). I guess they wouldn't simply survive without neigbours. But, where are the neighbours ?...

Crowded cities, sacred lakes and ancient kingdoms

by Norali

Visit, in this province, cities such as Antananarivo, Antsirabe (see my pages on those two cities). Then: Royal cities of Ambohidrabiby and Ambohimanga (both located at North of Tana) are worth the visit since they are sacred places and original towns of Imerina kings. They both played key roles in Antananarivo and Madagascar history. Rovan' Ambohimanga, (see my Tlogue in my Antananarivo page) for Merina history... and I come partly from this Northern area (from my Dad side, my Mum coming from two other ancient Merina kingdoms as well). On Ambohimanga Rova, it is on UNESCO World's Heritage list since 2001. One of the 2 Heritage sites which are in Madagascar.Mantasoa, with its famous lake, is located at East of Tana and worth a visit as well. Btw, Antsirabe has the volcano lakes of Tritriva and Andraikiba as well. Will add as soon as I can... * The fresh air & the serenity of Merina...

Faritanin' Antananarivo (Antananarivo province)

by Norali

Faritanin' Antananarivo is the capital city' s province. It is located in the Highlands, in the center of Madagascar. It is inhabited by Merina people. "Merina" means "Those who live in the heights". Therefore, the region is called "Imerina" as well. Merina people share the Highlands (altitude varying from 700 to 2800m) with Sihanaka (Eastern part of Highlands), Betsileo (Fianarantsoa province), Tanala, Bara (Fianarantsoa and Toliara provinces) peoples.Landscape is made of hills and plains (that house acres of ricefields), with wide ranges of red, green shades. Red shades come from red earth, orange bricks as ricefields, grass on hills display several shades of green depending on growing of rice plants. The region counts many sacred lakes as well. Some of them resulted from past vulcano activities (cratera lake Tritriva, for instance). Beware, many fady in those spots...Due to height,...

Trano Gasy: the traditional Merina house

by Norali

Quite all over Tana city and province, you'll find this traditional architecture along the more European styles. This house is in the village next to where my place in Malaza, a village North of Tana city is. My place is not even in Tana city but in its Province (Faritanin' Antananarivo). What is strange is that, when I used to live there, I didn't find those houses exceptional. I knew the style, I found it nice but nothing else attracted me to architecture. Asa grown up, my interests in architecture and in this traditional Merina style have gradually risen. This is what we, in Tana area, use to call a "traditional house", i.e as compared to the purely European styles (Scandinavian villas in Antsirabe European area, French villas all over the province). But looking closer at it, one would notice a style that is partly inspired (I heard) from the 18th-century style. Whose style should I...

When sun sets in countryside

by Norali

People in the Higlands and also the Bara tribe use to breed zebus. They are the main suppliers of zebu meat of the island. So, don't be surprised seeing such scenery when browsing the countryside and, even, the suburbs. Zebus going home and blocking the traffic. During the day, they are sent to graze or work in the ricefields. But they don't stay there for the night, they have to return "home". Since my home is in the Northern countryside of Tana, I am used to life in countryside.Only there you would notice this scenery: the cattle going home. At.4.30 - 5pm, the first ones to return home are the "birds": geese and ducks. As far as I could remember, "birds" know when to leave the ricefields and return home (in the village): when sun goes down. So, when returning home myself, I used to cross the birds and depending on where in the path you meet them, you can guess where to meet the...
