Looking for a last resort, low budget food when touring? Try Hotely gasy (under certains conditions though)
Hotely gasy are those tiny cheap restaurants that sell meal courses for passengers. Not to be mixed with kebab stalls.
This is not my type of restaurants but I tried one of them during my trip with my uncle, an adventurous man.
Instead of having lunch in a Chinese restaurant at Moramanga as usual, I had my meal course there. The driver of the taxi-brousse we travelled in decided to have a stop there since most of passengers were likely to have food there.
Cuisine is rather informal, not that much choice. A full dish of rice and well-cooked meat with veggies or leaves sometimes. Since they are cooked, it's safe.
But do avoid drinking water from tap. Have soda or mineral water, Eau Vive or Olympiko. And even in this case, make sure bottle cap is sealed. And drink it from the bottle.
Have ranovola instead (boiled and over boiled burnt-rice water). Tastes like a light coffee.
Favorite Dish: NEVER drink water from tap.
NEVER order salads and uncooked meal.

Two restaurants where you could eat yummy Chinese food, at reasonable price though I don't remember exact price. But since they are not part of those pricey restaurants in Tana, I assume that price per person would be less than $10.
Favorite Dish: - Chinese food
- At Guangzou, have a "Bol renversé": fried rice with lots of ingredients (eggs, meat, shrimps,....)
In both restaurants, soup is tasteful as well! Try nem and stuffed crab ! Unlike European restaurants, they don't buy them and just deep-fry. They use to make them. :-))
