by drolkar

Visit the town of ANTSIRABE, which translates as 'where there is much salt' and is located on the plains of central Madagascar. At an elevation of 1500 m, the town is known as a thermal spa resort and also as the center for trade in semiprecious stones. It was founded by Norwegian missionaries in 1872, and this European influence can be seen in the layout and architectural styles of the area north of the cathedral.

Visit the quiet little island called NOSY BORAHA ( ILE STE. MARIE in French ), which can be reached by either boat or plane from Toamasina. The airport on Nosy Ste. Marie is in Ambodifototra, and Air Madagascar operates frequent flights back and forth. This photo gives you an idea of the activity level there...! :)

Walk along the scenic coastline in TOAMASINA and admire the unusual vegetation... The origin of the town's name is disputed: one theory is that it was derived from the Portuguese name for St. Thomas ('Sao Thomas'), while another alleges that it came about when King Radama I visisted the area in 1817. He reputedly tasted the sea water and pronounced 'Toa masina' -- 'It is salty.'

' SALUT VAZAHA ! '.... ('Hi, White Person!') is what the little child standing in the doorway of this hut called out to me every 10 or 15 seconds over the course of the hour I spent waiting for the boat to Ile Ste. Marie!!

there are so many things to see in Madagascar, but just visit the national parks. That's where you can enjoy nature as it sbest and where it is still alive. Hopefully still for a long time.
